Sun People is one of the few modern producers with an unmistakable signature sound. For more than a decade, the Austrian has seemingly effortlessly pursued the plan of developing a soulful minimalism in the field between footwork, jungle and techno, creating moments of bliss for listeners and dancers.

With In Filtration and Paradigm I wanted to explore aspects of 4x4 Grime and Techno, touching ground on the dubstep-meets-techno sound that's been making rounds these recent years. The result is an honest approach to these worlds, attempting to pick up the fundamentals while incorporating my own sense of merging grime, 2-step, techno and dubstep.

'ECVA002', aka '5 Years of Echo Train' is a newly announced compilation by the Ōtautahi/Christchurch label of the same name. The imprint is celebrating its fifth year in rotation with a collection of tracks contributed by those who have already featured in its half decade life span.

One such contributor is Jagā, Echo Train's founder & conductor. 'Beam Trace' is a spacious showcase of Jagā's evolution not only as a label head, but a producer too. Rhythmic percussion is met by sci-fi melodies and breathy vocal samples, pushed along by electro-inspired key stabs.

Of the track, Jagā shared:

"The core of the song is from a dream I had aboard a distant space station. A pervasive vocal features throughout, which channels the crew's voices across the ship's intercom. The song unfolds through three emotional phases - a descent into darkness, a brief moment of uneasy stillness and an overwhelming intensity.

It all makes sense to me when listening, haha. It's always fascinating to hear how others perceive my art."

The release is in part dedicated to Lui Mill, a collaborator & friend of Echo Trains who sadly passed away last year. "We are honoured to have his incredible talent featured on this release," Echo Train shared.

'ECVA002, 5 Years of Echo Train' is available via Echo Train's Bandcamp & a very limited number of cassette tapes this Thursday, May 8.

PREMIERE: Jagā - 'Beam Trace' [Echo Train Records]

Japanese explorer of the deep Dayzero is next up on Nerve Collect with his Step Inna EP, which brings six tracks of meticulously crafted post-dubstep rhythm and bass. 

Tokyo-based Dayzero has long been providing a link between the Far East and the UK underground. His futuristic sounds rewire dubstep, techno, breaks and bass with psychedelic colours and spaced out moods on leading labels like Livity Sound and ZamZam. He has a new album on the way this year, but first comes this latest intersection of body-driven, mind-expanding sounds.  

'Revival' is engineered for full-body movement. It's intelligent, instinctive and just a bit unhinged as watery droplets and a frazzled lead warp space and time while mangled bass drills down deep. 'Step Inna' skanks through a dystopian dreamscape with chanting dub vocals. They echo like encrypted mantras as calculated bass patterns ground the groove, percussive hits launch you skyward and then collapse inward. 'Antibody' has spring-loaded bass that rebounds under rogue circuitry while the rhythm stutters in broken, syncopated spasms below a smattering of wobbly toms.

'Remains' is highly pressured and kinetic, a thudding rhythm with overdriven tribal percussion pining you to the 'floor. 'Alignment' is a tectonic transmission sent back from tomorrow—mechanical yet organic, the bassline rumbles with subatomic weight beneath ghostly pads and static-charged synth lines. 'Gravity Phrase' is where ancient rag	a meets future bass culture. Stringy Indian melodies linger in the shuffling dub rhythms and wordless vocals drift like vapour trails in a soundscape where mysticism and machinery collide. 

This is an EP of precision-guided portals to the outer edges of bass music.

Over the past year or so, Paul Woolford has kept himself extremely busy with his jungle- and UK hardcore-inspired Special Request project, somehow finding the time to drop an album and a 'Fabriclive' mix along with numerous EPs. On July 27, another EP called 'Through the Looking Glass' is set to arrive via the ever-reliable Houndstooth label. And while the bulk of the record is devoted to reworks of his material by the likes of techno superstar Nina Kraviz and rising talent Anastasia Kristensen, there's also one new track to be found: "Looking Glass." Ahead of the EP's official release, we debuted that booming drum & bass workout on Red Bull Radio's First Floor, our weekly look at what's new in electronic music.

Om Unit steps into 2020 with ‘Submerged’, a six-track EP comprised of varied uptempo grooves, which in his own way defy categorisation once again. The EP draws influence from various aspects of the techno landscape as much as borrowing from tropes of previous work including his trademark use of space, rhythmic tension and sub-heavy hypnotic bass melodies. A record that showcases further diversity and sonic innovation within the realm of what has been coined ‘160’, a loose term to describe a movement which he himself has helped to pioneer since the early 2010’s.

Submerged opens with the electro-inspired ‘Patterning’, which takes as much influence from Detroit as from the rhythmic structure of jungle and broken beat, drawing a parallel between these forms in a similar fashion to artists such as deep blue or even 4 hero might have in the 90’s but with an upfront broken structure that might even be described as ‘retro-futurist’ in it’s electro sensibilities. ‘A Groove’ comes next leaning fully into a 4 x 4 foundation, with classic Juke-style construction, paying respect to modern funk in the process with it’s classic Roland pads and sun-drenched synth lead line whilst borrowing a jungle break here and there not in a dissimilar fashion to his work as ‘Philip D Kick’. Side A closes with ‘Vertigo’ which takes us in to a minimal eyes-down realm with a hypnotic vocal sample and a half-stepping percussive structure all supported by a seriously low sub-rhythm. Not one for the feint-hearted selector. Side B opens with ‘Runes’ which invokes a sense of nostalgia back to his work on ‘threads’ with gently rolling percussion and bass lines that support a synth landscape that invoke the a sense of the other-worldly dance-floor. Next up it’s ‘Long Summer’ a grounded and percussive Jazzy workout not that dissimilar to tracks from 2019’s ‘Violet’ EP, taking influence from Bukem’s classic ambient jungle of the 90’s but with his own unmistakable half-stepping ‘slow-fast’ groove. The record closes with ‘Peninsula’ which again whilst not being dissimilar to the work of ‘Violet’ this time takes the 160 realm into to a slow-mo 4/4 groove heavily inspired by the masters of dub techno, backed up with a classic syncopated breakbeat in classic Om Unit style.

This EP is another chapter in Om Unit’s work around the 160bpm realm, taking complete ownership of his process and leaning away from the confines of genre once again, expressing ideas that whilst lean heavily into known places make connections that some might not at first easily perceive.
