On 15th Oct 2023, I played a set at the Workinonit MF DOOM tribute at The Hip Hop Chip Shop, Manchester alongside the almighty OMA, who absolutely smashed along with UK MCs, Batfunk & Pique Roscoe. A huge thanks to all the Workinonit crew, Ozzie & the team at The Hip Hop Chip Shop for such an amazing event & for the honour of being asked to perform a DOOM set too!

It’s actually the first time I’ve played out using my own gear which made things much easier too, on trusty Technics 1210s, Pioneer DJMS-7, Serato & Phase, which is always bulletproof & makes things so much easier!  I forgot to record the set on the day, so decided to put out the unabridged version I planned.  On the day, I played about half of this after OMA. The mix is jam packed with all things DOOM from samples, remixes, covers, production & even an unreleased joint with the ever-elusive Mr Fantastic!

Figured it's a good time to re-up this tape from six years ago. I've been hesitant to do so since there's five million J. Dilla tribute tapes out there, but...whatever. Maybe you all will dig this one too! Here are the notes from the original release:

"I really dug Dilla, his choice of records, his lush filtered samples, his basslines, and the fact he loved to eat donuts. I was introduced to his genius by Jumbo of the Lifesavas. He hit me with a dub of the early Slum Village album before it dropped, and told me to dub it and give it back to him the next day, cuz that was his only copy. And even rocking a dub of a dub, the beats were just so ill. I’d bump the shit til I couldn’t take the rhmyes anymore, but I never got tired of the beats.

I’d wanted to do this tape for awhile, and felt I should put something together dedicated to Dilla, as I was a fan of his music. Not every beat or 12 inch, but the feel of his production – he just had a great ear for great records. This tape is a mixture of some of my favorite Dilla-related records (that I own on wax) from well-known to more obscure, from rock to classic hip-hop tracks. It is by no means any kind of compendium, and isn’t meant to be. It’s just a brief sampling of music I dig, music that represents the inspiration I took from Jay Dee."

I know the phrase "Dilla Changed my Life" is something that almost seems watered down and become somewhat of a fad, but it seems to be something I am comfortable with saying.  

My story is some what similar to all of the great stories heard from all of our heroes in hip-hop. Most of their first encounters of Jay Dee's music was through the circulation of his Slum Village demo tape distributed around small circles primarily via Houseshoes & Q-Tip.  For my generation hip-hop was already around, but when you consider the actual time of understanding hip-hop, I was first introduced through a small vinyl collection from a close friend in High School, which included "Slum Village - Fantastic Vol 2".  The "Intro" track into "Conant Gardens" into "I Don't Know" was a life changing sequence for me.  Jam packed w/ Soulful rhodes, great mixing, thick drums, heavy bass lines, chopped drum breaks, rhythmic vocals, scratching, vocal chops etc. The density of the music in that 3 track sequence was unmatched (maybe until this day).  Since that time when I was maybe 14 (pre Dj years) I became obsessed w/ hip-hop music and the culture.  Over the years I studied anything Jay Dee (Dilla): his music, the moves he made, the records he sampled, the drums he chopped.   

Since his passing there have been 100's if not 1000's of tributes created to celebrate his catalog.  With the blueprint for me being the masterpiece mixes created by J Rocc in the early years following his passing, I felt like I needed to take another approach.  

This episode is more focused on connecting stories told by some of Dilla's greatest collaborators.   The music selections may not be reflective of his "greatest work" but they are chosen to help drive the story and help explain the reasons why he was so impactful to the game.  Much like his catalog and the 1000's of mixes out there are equally the same amount of stories circulating the internet of people talking about his impact.  These are some of the more important ones, or at least that helped me get a better idea of who he was and why he was a genius.  

Whether you are a new Dilla fan or a long-time Jay Dee fanatic, I hope this helps guide you to a greater understanding of the James Yancey legacy.

The "Dilla" Handclap No. 21 (Hosted by DJ Flow)

Well it's my birthday today, so I'm going to celebrate with this excellent mix from Beat Junkie and break-digger supreme J.Rocc. Raw sounds from an LA b-boy.

You don't get a word like "motherfucker" attached to your name for no good reason. William Bensussen, AKA The Gaslamp Killer, has been in peoples' faces right from the start. Coming up in the rock town of San Diego, Bensussen would continually clear dance floors in the city's Gaslamp district—hence the name—by playing Mobb Deep and Dilla.

Things didn't stay this way forever. In LA he became a resident DJ at Daddy Kev's Low End Theory, the mythologised weekly party and producer hangout that has seen the likes of Daedelus, Nosaj Thing and Flying Lotus rise from its ranks. It was on the latter's Brainfeeder that GLK met a global audience as a producer. 2009's My Troubled Mind and the following year's Death Gate threw up his love of grizzly beats and obscure samples. Seeing GLK behind a pair of turntables is, however, when the MF tag makes most sense. His shows are the epitome of unhinged energy. Rock, jazz, bass music and funk are just as likely to be aired as hip-hop, as he wigs out with his now trademark dance moves.

GLK's "Resident Killer mix" is 45-minute slice of what we're talking about—plus you get the added bonus of a coda comprised solely of music from Breakthrough, his madcap debut album which was released today through Brainfeeder.

What have you been up to recently?

Touring (as usual), working on new music with Jungle By Night from Amsterdam, not to mention enjoying this amazing summer of love!

How and where was the mix recorded?

In my room at my house in Los Angeles on ProTools with my Dr. Sample 303.

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

It's one of my best mixes yet. The first part is all about the heavy newer beat music with a bunch of unreleased stuff from my worldwide crew of beat making friends. The second part is a little more hip-hop turntablist influenced and the third part is all brand new GLK Breakthrough material!

Tell us about the writing of Breakthrough.

I worked on it tirelessly between touring and touring—trying to work with some of my favourite LA musicians to make it all come to life a little more than my previous records. Also, had to reach out to Dimlite (CH) all the way out in Zurich cause he is one of my favourite producers of all time and I am working on a whole record with him soon!

Outside of your LA base, where do you see as being other key strongholds for your sound?

London, Manchester, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Athens, Tokyo, Johannesburg and New York fuckin City are some of my most favourite places to play. They always get what I'm bringing to the table and always have amazing openers playing with me that make me want to run for the hills! Some of these cities even have Low End Theory-related events that stemmed from our little Wednesday night club in LA. Pretty fuckin cool.

What are you up to next?

Release parties all over the world plus a new Low End Theory podcast with a VERY special guest! Even planning a trip to India with Gonjasufi to try and record some new material there. But it's all in the works so I can't promise anything just yet!
