‘On & On: The Sounds of Detroit’ provides a chronological overview of the influence on sound and composition that was created and maintained by artists based in Detroit.

Concentrating predominantly on two of the most prominent genres of black music to emerge from Detroit, soul and hip-hop, this project presents a song from each decade from the 1960s up to the 2000s – focusing on tracks written, performed and/or produced by Detroit and Motown label musicians – using production and recording techniques in an attempt to re-create the now iconic Detroit sound.

Similar to the way in which Motown Records used the Funk Brothers house band on the majority of their early recordings, ‘On & On: The Sounds of Detroit‘ features a house band consisting of drums, percussion, piano/keyboards, guitars, bass guitar and backing vocalists, with several guest vocalists and string and horn sections featured on a number of tracks.
