"I hate being recorded," Mala says nine minutes into this interview. "I don't like my sets being recorded, I don't like being video recorded." The Deep Medi boss and DMZ cofounder is describing his fiercely independent nature to journalist Kieran Yates, explaining how bright lights and prompts leads to self-consciousness. That's why DMZ parties are held in dark rooms, as to encourage freedom, he continues.

Authenticity is a defining theme of Mala's career. Speaking to Yates live at SOUP in Manchester as part of RA's 21st birthday celebrations, the Croyden-raised artist discusses how signing a record deal with EMI at the age of 20 led to misrepresentation. This early exposure to the industry's commercial backbone paved the way for DMZ's democratic, inclusive ethos, he tells Yates. "If I create something that's true to myself, and I can live an authentic existence, somehow by us all being ourselves, I think that makes the world better."

DJ Merlín is an Electronic music producer based in Amsterdam. As an alumnus of composition and sound design, he has been sculpting a style that can be characterized as hybrid and animalistic. This style aims to stir up a wilder and darker side of the dancefloor, creating a sonic ambience of experimental yet accessible rhythms and riffs.

Next to being an artist, DJ Merlín is the programmer of Amsterdam collective Kraft.und.licht . Whether it's deep in the Amsterdam forest or in the hull of an old freight ship, they bring together the right ingredients of audience and artists.

Having physically installed her Format Wars Records shop upstairs at arkaoda Berlin for four months straight as part of A NEW WAVE - all roads for this finale edition of Absurd Lustre x Format Wars in essence led to this set.  

Befitting the moment to fulfil the space after Woody92 and Timnah Sommerfeldft - this recording is an impassioned take that runs its course through not only a year that was, but an epic poster campaign and an electrifying journey of sonic exploration and emotional release.

Labour Jacks is a new sublabel of One Eyed Jacks focusing more on techno and club tool, with artworks based on found, accidental art created by labour. The first few releases will showcase glue patterns found in ripped off plaques, where the gesture of the glue application by workers can be quite beautiful and graceful, even if unintentionally.

Later, as a member of the Sonnen Blumen Kerne project he released four vinyl records on Nara Records, Hypnologic, Techfui, and more recently made a number of releases on Holding Hands, Otake, Simple Things, Mixcult & R&S records. 

This is a real journey through the years!

Our next mix comes from a returning guest and a key part of the On Ro extended family, No Moon. Alongside iconic releases for Mechatronica, Craigie Knowes and Salt Mines, he has recently launched his own label, releasing club slammers on the No Moon Mean Series and warm house, IDM and ambient on the No Moon Cute Series. He's a fantastic DJ and someone we're always happy to run into, and we're very pleased to be able to present you this live recording. Some words from the man himself:

I'm very pleased to be able to share with you the recording from my set at Tag, Chengdu. I was meant to play for 3 hours but the recording ends abruptly at quite a high moment due to the club getting shut down by the police. Needless to say that was quite a memorable experience in itself and I also expected not to get a copy of the recording after that happened. But yeah such an honor to play there, and really happy to have the recording to remember it with as well.

Some background, I recently got the opportunity to travel around China and play in a bunch of different cities. The trip was pretty intense playing in 9 clubs in 3 weeks, which is also a very big difference to the amount I have been typically playing in the last couple of years. One of the things I've always considered important in DJ sets is improvising and not just playing something pre-prepared, but when you only play a couple of times a year this becomes really difficult. So yeah it was really great to have enough gigs in a short time to try and play like this again. Tag was the 6th show of 9 so by this point in the trip I felt really comfortable. The recording is full of new and old classics, blends and little snippets I'd worked out over the course of the tour, and even a rare instance of me playing a No Moon track. I hope you enjoy listening to it.
