great conversation so far Krista -- i was feeling really triggered to be skeptical at the beginning, hearing the word "Evangelicalism" but McLaren identifies some fundamental problems in history of European Christianity (e.g. colonialism).

I thought the monastic movement was a way to introduce Christianity within the Roman temple life. Nice guy and all, but full of B.S. The monastic movement was a Roman answer as to what the priests perceived as a very unstructured religion (Christianity).
