HYDRATION-Crystal and Spore Mix 005

Shambhala sets are ephemeral and fleeting but I like to try and upload them here so everyone can get a taste of  SMF Sunday morning at 7am in the LIVING ROOM. Most people have gone to sleep and the few stragglers that show up have either partied all night, or slept all night by accident and woken up dazed. I have a few die hard allies who make a point of attending these special times, and to them i give a true nod of deep appreciation. They get it. This is music to wind down to. It's music to drift to, to greet the sun, to stretch into a new day with endless possibility. I love making these mixes. 

As usual there's a multitude to thank but foremost, these mixes would not be possible without the relentless sifting done by Delvin Solkinson, whose appreciation for the chill beats is unmatched.  Sara and HOOLA, the stage directors of the LIVING ROOM have believed in me from day one and i love them to the end of time for giving me the chance to play each year, and doing all they do for the music community. As always the mix is mastered by Akhentek in the brand new ilum studios in the majestic rainforest of west coast BC. Big ups to Frogacudda for the controller. A special shoutout to Emma star, who is always front and center for my SMF set and stays to the end. She also snapped the picture on the cover. Precession: Crystal and Spore solstice 2024 summer mix

This year was the 20th anniversary of the Living Room stage at Shambhala. Lion-s and Hoola, the stage directors, have allowed me to DJ on this stage for at least 18 of them. I am grateful for the chance to bring downtempo beauty to the beach in the morning / early afternoon hours. This mix took place after LIGHTCODE, an incredibly captivating ambient music journey conducted by LSDream. It was one of the most unique and powerful moments I have ever seen at the festival in my 20 years of attendance. The point of my musical journey was to stay within the chill environment that Lightcode created and bring the vibe back up to dancefloor, while allowing everyone to remain solidly in that meditative space they had just achieved. A potent Time slot!

Afternoons at the Living Room stage at Shambhala are really about the Salmo river. It is usully really hot on the dancefloor and the bulk of the people, thousands it seems, are all along the stone shore . I select music for this river valley, to hear it echoing down and upstream and to see people swaying in the sunlight. This is not a technically perfect mix, but I felt I wanted it to be rleased while the summer vibes are still in full effect! Big thanks to Sara and Hoola for making the dream happen every year at the living room. Endless love and gratitude for Delvin Solkinson who supports this music project by staying ever vigilant on the crates! This is unmastered and raw. Maybe i will tinker with it later. Should be good!

shambhala chill mix 2016

As a  DJ i have had numerous unforgettable sets in beautiful settings, but my Shambhala morning sets are amongst my most beloved moments of time. I spend hours seeking out tracks that i feel will sound perfect echoing down the salmo river valley, knowing that the bulk of my sets’ attendees are essentially ready for bed, and probably should have gone to bed a couple of hours ago. I don’t consider it an issue if the dancefloor clears up while i play because subliminally my suggestion is that people come to terms with the fact that the sound is shutting off when I am done. I consider it a job to land the ship. 

This mix is not the board mix, which i believe is technically better, because originally i was slotted to play 1.5 hours but due to the fires and festival closure schedules i was only allowed to play one hour. This mix, made the night before i left for the festival, has a bonus 30 mins of music, though there are a couple of mixing hiccups which i corrected during the festival.

I am grateful to the Shambhala music festival for all they have done for me over the past 15 Shambs i have been booked to perform at. I am deeply grateful to sara lion-s, and mike hoola, for believing in me all these years and bringing my career as a designer/ vj / dj into the next level by booking me on spec, time after time. So much love for those two.

This set is called Pray For Rain. It started raining in the last 3 tracks of this set up at the ranch. I always shed a tear. Happy 20th shambhala. Thanks for being unforgettable every time.

SMF 2018 was like a dream. This mix is not the board mix, as the unnamed sound guy pulled the plug on the mixer during my set. This was recorded a couple days before, has a few blemishes but the jist is there. The Morning set is an art form and I aim for beauty. Everflow - LIVING ROOM 2019 mix

In the year 2020 the word foresight has especially potent meaning. Hindsight they say is 2020, and this mix aims to redirect our intentions towards the road ahead.

This mix was conceptually started as a Full Moon Library set at CoSM Chapel of Sacred Mirrors last winter. The track selection reflects the winter and spring of 2020. There was optimism for what this year had in store and the early working title of “foresight” was anticipating what promised to be an exciting creative year ahead.

The curation happened in a number of sifts in which at least 4 previous versions of this same mix were made  as it evolved over a season of refinements. The final mix was done live on a Twitch Stream in mid April with cloud oriented visuals. It was mastered in Ilum studios on the Sunshine Coast of BC. by Akhentek. Special thanks to Frogg Acuda for the Traktor S4  controller to make this on.

This music is purposefully nebulaic and lyrical. It is meant to uplift and relax. Crystal & Spore are deeply grateful to all the musicians for their offerings.
