RNT co-head JKriv does it up royal here with a bit of old and a bit of new. On the A side “The Queen On Her Throne” is one of J’s seminal reworks in all of its 8 min glory, and although names have been changed to protect the innocent, a bomb by any other name is still a bomb! On the flip, a lesser known West African 70’s jam by Oscar Sulley & The Uhuru Dance Band is worked up into a raucous jazzy afro-house stomper in “Bukom Mashie (JKriv Edit)” Plus there’s a the stripped down beats-n-synth-apella  of “Queen’s Beats,” perfect for mixing with the OG or played on it’s own!

Blessed, with a bruising Otis Redding like voice the young Toots had been discovered singing in a barbershop in Trench Town. By 1973 Toots and The Maytals had their rabble-rousing bar-room reggae down to a fine art. Funky Kingston, recorded at the Dynamic Studios in Kingston for Warwick Lyn and on Island Records, ramps the soul side of their sound for one of the most uplifting reggae songs of all time. 
 
Toots and the Maytals became a favourite of rock critics in the 70s and listening to Funky Kingston, it is easy to understand why. The muscular rhythms, “Toots” Hibbert’s hoarse exhortations and his slightly surreal lyrics appealed to the spirit of a more fundamental age that rock music had lost.

Italian producer Stefano Gamma goes by many names, and De Gama is one of his most lauded in no small part thanks to the classic tribal jam 'Afrika' that continues to get heavy rotation to this day. He has gone by many names since he started releasing music in the '90s, but he now returns to his favoured moniker for another Afro-Latin flavoured cut-up on new Italian imprint Samosa that's making me wish summer would last just a little bit longer.
