Weighing in with more of the deadly payloads that make systems weep, Alan Johnson return to Sneaker Social Club to finish what they started on 2022's The Stillness EP.

Gareth and Tom's sharp instinct for the fundamentals of crushing half-step pressure remain undiminished on this latest EP. Their sound palette reaches across contrasting strands of music culture, and every bar is teeming with micro details of sound design which give the tracks a living, breathing quality.

Local Action is very proud to present Rushing 1621, the first EP from a transatlantic meeting of minds and styles from two of our favourite artists: Om Unit and James Bangura. 

Based in Bristol, Om Unit is a titan of UK soundsystem music, pulling footwork, hip-hop, jungle, bass, techno, breaks and more into wild new shapes across an illustrious 15-year plus career.

DC’s James Bangura meanwhile has emerged as one of the most exciting artists on America’s east coast, releasing solo heat on labels like Incienso and !K7 and regularly touring the world as part of the Black Rave Culture collective, drawing from regional club styles across the States. 

The EP’s title Rushing 1621 is a reference to both artists’ area codes, so UK-meets-US synergy is the name of the game here (and if you know Local Action, you probably already know that this sort of thing is our catnip). Garage, house, breaks and even moments that recall early ‘00s proto-dubstep and dub-techno are all present, but really, it’s both artists’ immaculate drums and flawless production that drives this thing. Some records just feel unimpeachable, and this is one.

"It feels like at the moment, we're lost in the long dark tunnel. Plenty of dance music seems to operate in a revivalist form, within a regression cycle, it's hard to pinpoint the exact sound of "now" without it referencing other points in history.

"We're trapped in 20th century culture on higher definition screens", poses Mark Fisher in a seminal lecture, and thus, exposes Berardi's concept of the Slow Cancellation of the Future. "Nothing ever really dies, but that's not good". In 1992 it was impossible to imagine the shape of music 6 months into the future, so why are we now constantly going back to these genres?

My aim with this release was to try and participate in the legacy of the Hardcore Continuum within the sonic context of the current world. A hyper-online, overstimulated landscape where our attention is constantly invaded by notification after notification, stimulus after stimulus. I try to materialise this by reshaping sharp noise into pulse, genre staples like the breakbeat get torn apart and forced into a brand new skeleton, and riot-invoking grime chants are repurposed into music set for a bleak now. Jungle, Dub, Grime, Garage, they are all present here, but the heavy gravitational pull of their legacies presents to me as a black hole I've tried to encapsulate in this EP.
