After La Perte, this is another miniature composition for solo piano. They are both part of a long-term project to write piano miniatures that depict honest and sometimes raw emotions.

La Tourmente can have very many interpretations. Part of its inspiration comes from the schism that I perceive between creating ‘New Music’ and ‘Neo-Classical/Romantic’ music. Naturally, we composers strive to understand music of the past and contribute something to help the arts advance. Nobody’s Bach-styled fugue will ever be as good as his, nor Beethovenian piano sonatas will ever be as good as Beethoven’s. We should and need to write new music. However, composers are often so pushed to be innovative to the extent that their music truly is far from other people’s music but also often far from audience’s understanding. Not all music is for entertainment and not all music should make people feel good or happy. High arts do require time and effort from the receiving side to appreciate the work. Although, highly original elements of a work are not the sole factor reflecting a work’s quality and do not justify the work’s inaccessibility to others. I feel that today’s composers often mistake this. Alongside this dichotomy in creation of new works that La Tourmente hints at, it aims to induce a restless, unsettling and uncomfortable atmosphere.

As composers, we sometimes choose to evoke human sentiments. Being composers, we however do not suffer from human sentiments. Instead, we write music about them!!!

Here's a short piece of music for all those who had a broken heart at some point in their life.

A lighthearted piano piece hinting at works of the old masters as well as being settled well in 21st century. Dedicated to my wonderful piano teacher Rita and composed in 2013. Many thanks to my friend Graham Waterhouse for a great performance!

Andante con leggiero e delicatamente

Here is a studio recording of my Balkan piece played by Edinburgh University Brass Band in the Reid Concert Hall. This work was inspired by hitchhiking in the Balkans, meeting the local people and getting to know their culture.

A Balkanic Eruption

Ondřej Soukup is an exciting young conductor with a diverse repertoire of 250+ works by men and women from the last 500 years. He has recently performed with BBC SSO, Czech Chamber Philharmonic, Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic and others. In the 2022/2023 season, Ondřej makes his debut with the Copenhagen Philharmonic, The Danish Sinfonietta, Ålborg Symphony, Århus Symphony and Odense Symphony.
