Q: Hi Lothar, thank you for curating this joyful episode of ODP Invites! You’ll be performing at our upcoming NYE event with a special B2B set alongside Sem. Can you elaborate on what we can expect of this set? 

For this B2B set, we thought it would be fun to showcase our individual styles while also surprising each other by exploring each other's niches. For me, this means diving deep into Sem’s world of groovy house and finding records with Latin or Afro influences, or any other exotic gems. Additionally, Sem and I will be heading into the studio to create a fresh new tune specifically for this NYE event, which we’re really excited about!

Q: In 2024 you’ve published your edit of ‘Taxi’ by Salvi Francesco, could you tell us some more about the background of this record and what marks your signature on this edit? (https://soundcloud.com/lothar-mastenbroek/francesco-salvi-taxi-lothar-edit?in=lothar-mastenbroek/sets/edits-reworks) 

Absolutely! I stumbled upon the original record and was immediately hooked by its catchy melody and playful lyrics. It’s such a fun tune! Apparently, it was a huge hit in Italy in the late ’80s, and you can even find some bizarre live performances by Francesco Salvi on YouTube. Adding to the absurdity, the song's premise is about a man trying to get a taxi, only for someone else to steal it, very much in the style of Monty Python. To make it suitable for a club setting, I added more punch to the drums, rearranged the break to keep its energy, and layered an extra bassline while staying true to the original.

Q: What is your favorite record label and why?

That will definitely have to be Fauve Records, Hong Kong. They release the most creative, obscure, crazy records and edits and any of these tunes can be such a great tool to introduce a curveball in your set. It mostly italo but I recommend anybody to dig around their ‘Extinct Melodies From the World series’, you will be blown of your socks.
