At only 19 years old, French producer THEOS says that last year he decided to dedicate his life to music. Now he has scored his first vinyl EP, continuing Shall Not Fade’s new Killer Cuts series that focuses on no-filler dancefloor oriented house music. There’s more than a touch of French to the funky groove of We Miss The Crowd, featuring collabs from Denyl Brook, Cosmonection and Soulkemist.

Opening out the record, ‘Lie Machine’ is a delicious warm-up for what is to come. The unstoppable bassline and disco guitar samples get your hips moving while vocal snatches get into your head and won’t get out. The title track’s sultry groove is similarly catchy, with the pulsing kick and deep bass melody evoking a nod to the deep tech sound of UK house music but panning synths adding that filter house edge, sweeping the listener on to ‘Keep Creating Your World’. The hard pulse of this track is balanced with sweeping pads, ethereal and summery. Organic jazzy piano loops take centre stage in the sublime production. Onto the B-side and three stellar collaborations with some more of the best France has to offer; ‘Jazzy Cruise’ with Denyl Brook is skippy, upbeat day party gear, with classic noughties filter sounds that tease the ears. THEOS and Cosmonection work together on ‘Unusual Ego’; sweet fuzzy chords but an Ed Banger style melody keep the record pumping for the closer, ‘Spread Positivity’ with Soulkemist. Cool and dance floor ready, the climax of the EP is full of nothing but good vibes. Don’t miss out on the digital bonus track from THEOS either; ‘Livin’ & Lovin’’ is a pumping deep house tool guaranteed to get hands in the air.

Having scorched onto our radars over the last few years with a string of appearances on the likes of Cray1, Labworks, Lemon-Aid, Play Groove and many more, the heat rises once again with this fine-tuned MOOD debut&#8230;

 

&#8216;Have To Talk Tonight&#8217; is timeless in every direction: its dreamweaving synth-surged intro screams Renaissance 20 years ago, its conga-cruising, swinging groove screams Space Terrace 15 years ago, its twisted diva vocal screams Underwater 10 years ago. But most of all it screams ageless, rolling sexy house music.&nbsp; 

Tackling a topic we can all relate to, &#8216;Babbling In Dreaminess&#8217; continues the theme of rolling hypnosis with a dubbier focus purring R&amp;B harmonies drape over the salubrious bass and slinky percussion.

 

Finally Daniel takes us deeper into the balmy summer&#8217;s night with &#8216;Let It Ride&#8217;. A sweltering groove that sees ghostly vocal elements and whispering commands intertwine with craftily positioned percussive hits that fly in from all angles: strong parallels can be drawn with the sounds of Circo Loco and Peace Division in their prime. And for this type of swinging, percussive, hip-shaking house comparisons don&#8217;t get any higher.

Utopia Records uncovers the work of Alex Kassian the Kyoto born Berlin based producer and DJ whose work as Opal Sunn and Al Kassian has been turning heads and shifting feet in recent times. Over the last decade Kassian hosted word of mouth dances in London and Berlin where he gained a reputation as one of Europe’s most promising artists. Kassian’s recent output has been primarily composing scores for contemporary dance and theater in Berlin, an approach he brings here to this 6 track EP “Hidden Tropics”.

Kassian inspired by other Utopia Records artists such as Lars Bartkuhn and Vangelis Katsoulis delves deeper into his compositional scope for a sound that joins the dots between ambient, world music to spiritual house in parts inspired by his homeland of Japan as heard on ‘Bells of Ukyo’ and the 80’s Sakamoto-esque ‘Olson Waters’. The title track is a breakthrough in contemporary house music, sure to be picked up on by the tastemakers from New York to Johannesburg to Berlin to Amsterdam to Tokyo and beyond.

Alex Kassian - Olson Waters

Berlin based Kapote, co-leader of the Toy Tonics label, is back with three new jazz funk inspired tracks on ‘The Body Move’ EP, including the slap-bass title track that delivers an infectious groove. 

Having recently emerged in the past few years releasing exclusively on his Toy Tonics imprint, Kapote has enjoyed a bit of early success, earning the top spot on both Traxsource and Juno for his track ‘The Nose’ released in November 2016. Now he’s set to drop his first EP of 2017 with more of his distinct, funk-fueled style.

With a strong background in playing keyboard and bass in jazz bands, Kapote’s talents shine through on ‘The Body Move’. The bass melody paired with the warm harmony of his piano is pure, feel-good dance music at its finest. Steady percussion completes the track and showcases his aptitude for dancefloor focused mid-tempo house.

Kapote’s ‘The Body Move’ EP is set for release on April 21.
