Amsterdam-based artist Serena shapes morphing atmospheres consisting of a bold and unexpected fusion of aggressive noise with atmospheric musical elements, dubby loops, distorted guitars and harsh vocals. Serena, founder of SUBURBIA, Tbilisi's Mutant Radio collaborator and member of Garage Noord, dives into the past to recall old traditions and its ghosts of a lost time to create new non-linear narratives.

# 1 Insects.
I feel them.
I hear them, everytime I look at her, side-eying her profile. A sound like the
relentless whir of an electric lamp or the distant noise of a broken radio. It fills
my ear and I can't ignore it. Like tinnitus, it drowns out everything else.
But when she catches me secretly staring, she gives me that perfect smile,
signed by the little shining pearls of her teeth.
Her Perfect body eases my anxious mind. She covered me in tender kisses,
gave me dazzling pleasure, with the quivering warmth of her insides.
I am under her spell.
But this time, what a pity. Why can't I ignore that small dot at the corner of her
blue eye? I take her hand and she comes closer, like a groom to his bride at
the altar.
This dot becomes my only fixation. I stare at it with transfixed intent. It begins
to move. From that singular point in the white of her eye it pushes against her
eyelid. I can't look away. First I notice a transparent wing, and then another, a
head and the tiny hairs that shimmer on that fly’s filthy thorax.
The bug hesitates, flexes its wings, rubs its mandibles and flies away.
I look at the love of my life. With her beautiful golden hair. My hands follow the
line of her body as I take solace in the delicate shape of her neck. She never
stops smiling.
As my hands wrap around her elegant neck, I begin to squeeze .
Her blue eyes now tainted with red, her red lips now tainted with blue, her
gentle body begins to shake and tremble, as the light of her life begins to
leave her.
Then nothing.
Finally, silence.
A quiet, colossal, deafening silence.
Like a dark wave on cold seas, tenuous, subtle, plain, and then suddenly high,
dangerous and roaring, the cacophonous hum rises. As her dead mouth
breaches open, a million bugs storm out: flies and wasps, beetles and
centipedes, scarabs, cockroaches, ticks, ants, spiders and worms.

They surround me. They envelop me, they enter me. I have never stopped
feeling her love.

☯ A little more information about this upcoming DIY camping festival ☯
Gradient was conceived by two LA event/party spaces, New Palm @newpalm and Print Shop, and occurs annually during springtime in Johnson Valley (two hours from LA). I can’t say enough good things about this DIY festival—everyone looks after each other, sharing food, drinks, and camping supplies.

The land, owned by Bear Glass, almost seemed to be landscaped with a small, music festival in mind. It features dedicated areas for parking, a camping area, and a speaker stage, not to mention the wildflowers were blooming all around us. Bear also runs a loudspeaker design and manufacturing company, Mobius Acoustics. This year's sound system included four Synergy Horns added to the PA, built by John Clements (the sound technician for Gradient and Bear’s next-door neighbor) and Anthony Bisset (a founding member of Mobius Acoustics).

My personal opinion: it’s my favorite camping festival in Southern California.

Regarding the recording, I utilized an Ableton Live session as a third channel to generate psychedelic, harmonic, and haunting textures alongside two channels of CDJs. I use this kind of like a sonic glue to transition between songs in different keys. The goal of this set was to take you on a sonic journey for the heart and mind, balancing light with moments of darkness, and from early to new electronic music. Enjoy :)

One Child Policy is the sonic moniker of Dennis Ruowei Cao / 曹偌伟 , a Los Angeles based music producer, sound designer, DJ, and software engineer. Cao was raised by two electrical engineers brought up in China; they helped spark his fascination with electronic music at a very early age. 

His breakthrough debut, ​Cultural Transmissions​, released in November 2017, delivered a unique take on atmospheric techno, electro, acid and left-field house. It caught the attention of publications such as Resident Advisor, Mixmag and XLR8R. 

Soon after he released on labels such as Acid Camp(LA), Black Lodge (LA) , Guangzhou Underground (Guangzhou, China), and Arca's Mutants Mixtape. He runs an online radio show on Lower Grand Radio (Oakland) and has also appeared on various radio stations such as Rinse FM, NTS, The Lot Radio, Dublab, Currents.FM and others.
In late 2020, he started an electronic label called Dian Nao (电脑, “electronic brain”) with his latest EP It Mirrored Me (它反映了我), which garnered support on Apple Music editorial and Magnetic Mag.

His hybrid DJ sets explore a wide range of moody emotions and introspection through futuristic, psychedelic, hauntingly beautiful and melancholic strains of electronic music.
