I Once Saw the Revolutionary in You...

I once saw the bright lights
sudden flash and then gone--
or gone in sudden flash
bulbs explode and shatter the daily grind
--all the energy of dreams--
you were once blooming with hope
you said there should be a great new country,
for a fair and better future...
You were one of the few who dared to return
to the mother, to the mother land
at first to watch the hyenas running
round and round
snapping at each others tails
and in disbelief you blurred your own vision
then bottled it
stale beer
even the torch you held high
burnt out
in weak curls of smoke
at the end of hourly joints
Now all that you remember
is that you didn't
want to know the white mans ways,
you didn't want
to study in his school,
and you didn't want to work
in his factories
until there was nothing left to work for,
because you forgot
what you were working for...
This is your land and you are still surprised
that there is no material
that there is nothing to build
that the heat is simply too hot to move in;
you feel blacker than black,
and you roll on
a slave to the days
Who ever told you it would be different
here on earth?

One Deck Pete (Pete P from Weeds up to me knees and London in your lunch hour) records under the name Madtone when he is not making compost, gardening, practising tai chi, listening to his beloved shortwave radio or writing for blogs. He resides in South London where he has been releasing music on his Blossoms Kitchen label since the beginning of time it seems.

His music is influenced by his collection of seventies reggae and soul scratched 7'ers, old punk tapes and fanzines, ancient shortwave recordings, warped cassette tapes, reggae soundtapes, balearic DJ mixes and what he records off his Yaesu FRG-7700.
