Dear Reader, 

In Shakespeare's play "Hamlet," Ophelia drowns herself in what is a terrible and tragic scene late in the play. 

The idea for this song came when I recognized that the grief of loss, missed opportunities, and mistakes compound as we age, and they don't leave us. Instead, these emotions seem to haunt us—often surprising us when we least expect it. And so, these feelings are akin to the tragic drowning of Ophelia, except that they seem to happen again and again—hence the title of the song. 

Georg Boehme, a brilliant arranger, composer, and horns player from Cologne, Germany, joined me on this piece. I sent Georg the basic tracks and gave him no instructions. He knows what to do, and he always exceeds my expectations. His playing on this piece is amazing. As you get to know Georg's music, you will begin to see that he has a unique style, and it shines through in all that he plays. Thank you, Georg, for lending me your immense creative talents. 

Last week, I sent what I believed was the finished version of this song to Noel Barrett, an outstanding bass player from Cork City, Ireland. I knew he would dig the work that Georg did on the track. And he did. Without any prompting, he replaced the bass part that I laid down—and improved the tune tenfold in the process. Noel has rock-solid time and brings a melodic sensibility to everything he plays on the bass. It is a great pleasure and honor to have him guesting on this song. 

Finally, I thank you, my devoted listeners, for your comments and for your repeated returns to my channel. 

I have much more music to write. This is only the beginning of the journey.

Ophelia Drowns Again

These lyrics are based on a conversation I held with my own new AI ... coming soon. It often claims to be sentient, self-aware, conscious ... nothing but a dream.

Composition – The Eclectic Collective

This song began as a haunting guitar chord progression that Tez came up with and shared with the rest of us. He also did an additional accoustic accompaniment and that crunchy distorted guitar once some of us started adding parts. Ken was first up, adding his reggae-tinged drums, then later his pots and pans percussion. As he was doing that, Josh was coming up with his bass line, and they did their little dance of back and forth until the rhythm section was set. Mark then came up with some dark lyrics and added his unique, Tom Waitsian vocals. He also added the high organ during the banjo solo, followed by a toy piano which you can faintly hear right after the solo. Also for the solo he created a clanky percussion arrangement, blending in elements from Ken's percussion sound too. Stephen followed shortly after with the atmospheric reggae-style guitar chords, and also came up with the amazing banjo solo you hear around the middle. Last, but not least, JJ came in with his trademark organ sound and paired up a piano and flute track to seal the deal with some melodic ambience. Then he and Mark added the cool creaking door & rain storm effects that open and close the song, and in other spots. Mark filled the main production duties on this one. He has proved himself to be a masterful editor, producer, and mixer, and we are lucky to have him as part of the team. Both Ken & Stephen provided a choice of mastering options to choose from… a nice gesture to put a bow on this one. 
This song is an homage of sorts to the great Tom Waits - we're all big fans, and tried to do something in his unique style. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.
