Jaime wrote and performed this for her sons wedding and it was the song they had for their dance together at the reception. As you can imagine it has very deep emotional connection to all of us and especially Jaime and we hope others will enjoy it as well :)

The first  .15 seconds of this is a short piece of music that was seemingly the last track on the Van Halen record "Women and Children First". It was a few bars that faded out on the original record, and was planned to be the opening track on the next album "Fair Warning". 

It never made its way back for that and has always been one of my favorite guitar grooves from Eddie but also I always wondered what it could have been.

Where Ed would have gone with this is anyone guess...

The most told story is that the working title: "Growth" was assigned to the track but not sure if that was ever official or not as it was always considered a (hidden track) if you will.... 

I did not set out to copy or compare myself in anyway to the mighty Van Halen. or believe I could play like him even a little bit... I just felt loss when he passed a while back and wanted to do this for kicks.                     
                                                                                                                   
So rewind in time to late 70s, 80s and early 90s. I was a big fan and was inspired to just put something together for fun in honor of all the good times and inspirational guitar work and music. In production I was shooting for an 80s vibe or feel that seems similar to the production sound of that time, I was looking to keep some like elements to the groove and also wanted to introduce some of the growling like synths VH used in the Fair Warning track "Sunday Afternoon in the Park".  

I had fun putting this together and I hope a couple others might dig it also... enjoy!!

My Thoughts:
When I wrote this track I had vocals in mind but then it ended as an instrumental... then I thought of Nick and wondered how his powerful, unique skillset as a writer and singer (although most of us know him as the amazing guitar virtuoso that he also is) would come together on this track and really to my full amazement, Nick totally captures a whole new level for the track while also encapsulating the exact killer vibe I thought he would bring in my imagination ... in fact my imaginational expectations were blown away... Such a joy to do this with Nick again, and I hope again :) enjoy

She said: this song started out like many of our other tunes...an AWESOME guitar riff from Gary! He sent it to me to see if I was feelin' it...and, of course, I was...LOTS!!! :)He told me he was hearing a kind of "the grass isn't always greener on the other side" kind of vibe with this piece and he set about writing some lyrics...the snippet he sent me with the music, lyrics and a vocal melody was SO cool!! I couldn't wait to get started on it with him. He wrote what is my FAVORITE line in this whole song..."All I wanna do is breathe easier inside"...just perfectly said and i SO get it!! we went about building up this song one layer at a time...one verse at a time...I came up with a bit of piano that was inspired by Gary's original guitar snippet which he incorporated into the intro and also in the middle of the piece...that's kind of how we create. We just let the music go where it wants and we piece it together as we go. I am such a fan of Gary's guitars and the wall of sound he creates with all of the layers he puts in there...it's powerful, it's heavy, it's strong and commanding...and there is no doubt that his guitars mean business when he brings them out to play...lol. As always, it's my pure pleasure that I am able to create music with Gary...i absolutely adore his voice and the music that comes out of him...and not only that...he is so full of support and encouragement and he makes me feel like I can do anything...he is the driving force behind these vocal melodies...and i'm SO very grateful that I get to sing along with him. Thank you, Gary...for sharing your gift of music with me and for creating another cool song for us to share...and thank you to our SC friends who continue to listen and enjoy the music that comes out of us :)

He Said: It has been a while since we did a track for various reasons but Jaime and I are alway in contact bouncing ideas around and discussing things we want to say. I was so rusty coming back to my guitar it took a while get the hands workin again heh. I think Jaime really said it all on the theme of this track. I just really want to say how good it feels to be doing music with her and for her hanging in there during this hiatus. She is so much one of the best people I ever met and always pushes me to a higher level because she is so high level that means so much to me. This was a lot of fun to work on as we really wanted to do some sort of unique things vocally with harmony and I wanted some vast key shifting change elements in there to go with the contrast of the theme. The intro was sort of going for this musical interp of what happens deep down under that grass and a kind of nature meets sonic electronica... heh

She said: this tune started out with a piano snippet that I came up with...i sat down on one side of the piano bench while Gary sat down on the other side...i played/looped my piano part and Gary played a melody on top of it...how cool is that?? So the first section that you hear is actually Gary and I playing together :)
that was the starting point...then Gary sat down with his synth/keyboard and came up with a killer section that was totally impromtu and SO cool! i love the transition into that section and the dynamics he was able to achieve with that...so, within that section there was a melody that Gary asked me if I would like to expound upon...so, i sat down at the piano with that melody in mind and came up with the outro to this piece. When Gary and I create music..it truly is a back and forth process...one inspires the other...always :)
Gary also got out his guitar and came up with some AMAZING emotional guitar lines and walls of sound that i love SO much! I can't say (enough) how much fun we have while creating music...we are truly blessed and ever so grateful that these songs/melodies continue to find their way out of us :)

He Said: This is a spontaneous track as the opening section was Jaime and I playing together on the same piano bench... It was a one take and it was really cool that we captured it live. We then built the rest of the track together from there and I really am a fan of diffusive ,gradual, free form compositions  . I  have been working with some new tones and textures on the guitar and I was glad to put a few of them in this... If there is a message to the track it is to remain flexible or malleable at all times to the best of my ability... or its about a bendy plywood skin used in cabinet construction... probably somewhere in between is the vibe :) Enjoy and grab it if ya want the free DL... as always making music with Jaime is just like the best thing I get to do.

The Phenomenon Of Craving ~ Original One and Other tune

She said:  this tune started out like many of our tunes do...Gary found some cool musical snippets/ideas that he had created previously...and he began to expand on them....i'm so glad that he takes the time to record these musical ideas as they come to him..even if they aren't used "in the moment"...we eventually find our way back to them..and have SO much fun with the creation process.   After listening to the beginnings of what Gary was working with...i was inspired to sit down at the keys and come up with some piano that Gary incorporated into our tune.  He then wrote all of the lyrics...totally on the fly...he's such a cool lyric writer...the words just flow out of him in the coolest of ways...and usually in a very melodic way as well...the melody and the lyrics (usually )come at the same time.  Gary, then, began to add lots and lots of layers of goodies with such cool textures and tones..i, most especially, love his piano/key work and his guitars..and, of course, his voice which gives me goosebumps (still) ...he never ceases to amaze me with his creativity and unique musical ideas/visions and his ability to think and hear outside the box...we've been away from music for a while for various reasons...and we (both) miss the time we get to spend creating...so, this song is extra special...as we got to spend some time in "music mode" together :)

He Said: This tune is about things we end up craving... and how it can start with a small move... Like saying Im just gonna have one cookie and then the next thing is we want a whole bunch, thats the phenomenon. Its not always a bad thing either, it can be a craving for good things also and things we need. This tune is not a deep delve into that but a loose musical interpretation of the mechanism behind it and when ya think about it ya can see how a thing can snowball and how sometimes we even need help with it.  Like Jaime said we had a good time doing this tune as we been a bit less active with music lately. I loved the piano and the vocals she brought along also. We have been trying to find out genre and through lots of discussion over the years we have settled on "Merge Groove" > it represents the merging of multiple styles and musical vibes from Jazz to Disco , Rock to Progressive, Gospel to EDM... We try to mix a little of all of it from various influences over the years....

She said:  this tune started out as a really cool/smooth synth melody that Gary created...everything that came after that...all inspired by that melody :)    He sent that along to me with the BPM and i came up with some piano parts that "slide along" with that synth and the most AWESOME guitars that Gary has added.   I so much love the walls of sound and all the layers and layers of guitars that Gary lays down to create that sound that we both enjoy so much.  The lyrics/words in this tune are quite simple...."we're just sliding along"...in life, each day we are presented with obstacles and opportunities...the best we all can ever do...is just "slide along" and enjoy the ride...it may not always be easy...but it's ALWAYS do-able...it's a real treat creating music with Gary and, although, our music time has been a bit limited...it's always nice to get back in there and let the music flow...and enjoy that back and forth vibe that we dig so much...and, of course, i'm so very grateful and truly blessed that Gary enjoys the slide with me :)

He Said: Haha.. kind of a tribute to all the famous 2 lyric songs from back in the day with a modern vibe and an instrumental heavy focus.  Like Jaime Said, its just about sliding along through life from one thing to the next and remaining easy and malleable to it all as best we can.  Jaime brought me 3 very cool piano set pieces for this track and I set a tone with the synth vibe which she elaborated on in some really cool ways I felt. The intro synth sounding like Arabian horns etc is all guitar with some more gainy distorted guitar mixed in around it. This song was a lot of fun to work on with Jaime and I love how she worked in her vocal around mine. She said:  this is what happens when Gary sinks his teeth into a cool "retro cover" and completely turns it on it's head :)    He had mentioned this tune to me and thought it may be a cool song to cover...but, in our own way...a bit edgier...with GUITARS.  Oh yes...i have to "all cap" that as he knows just how much i LOVE those guitars of his.  The coolest thing to me...the intro of this tune...the first, say 1:30...it doesn't sound like any tune that you may know...BUT when it gets to a certain place...a "synth melody" comes in and you have an "A HA!" moment...and you know, instantly what song this is :)

Gary was/is the amazing creative mind behind this music...I did the synth melody for us on my piano...but, everything else...he created/designed...arranged and nailed! i absolutely adore how he went about this and how he kept it "recognizable" but also turned it into a cover that is SO us.  We had an absolute blast creating this...and we certainly hope you enjoy it...and that, perhaps, you will be singing along with us as we go :)

He Said: I was not a big Disco fan back in the 70s and early 80s but came to appreciate much of the genre in more recent years... Its just music that makes me smile sometimes, some times because its fun and sometimes cause I survived it...haha! I always dug the vocals on this track and synthesized vocal were kind of coming into a phase where they sounded cool. Plus that  crazy hook and 120 BPM range that resonates with a 60 BPM heart rate, and that is the feel I was shooting for in this...something that syncs up with ya in the pocket or the groove and then sorta takes ya into the past a bit while still sliding into some kind of future.

Jaime played the iconic synth lines all through the track and I built the rest of the sort of gallop all around that... When she sent me her vocals I thought we would be both singing but I just thought she nailed the vocals and I thought I might detract from that...so I sang some of the Funky chorus... It was so fun going back and forth with this with Jaime and reliving that period of time in life. Great memories. Hope it comes across hehe its definitely a departure from the original and ya will probably wonder what the heck it is till it slides into the essence of the original....

My Fulcrum ~  A Tune by One and Other ((((HeadPHone best)))

She said:  this is a tune that started out as a bit of an instrumental
and "merge grooved" it's way into a vocal tune :)   this tune is also
very special to me because the intro was played/created by my son...he has a kalimba and was very excited to show us how it worked and what it sounded like...Gary suggested he play a little bit of a melody and he would record it...we all dug it so much that we decided to make it the intro of our new tune :)it was a one shot recording...and i smile every time i hear it :)

So, as Gary was working on all the different twists and turns with his
SUPER cool creative mind...creating the cool grooves and choosing all
the interesting and edgy synth tones...i happened to lean up and reach for some ibuprofen (back ache)...Gary asked me what was wrong and i said "i hurt my fulcrum"...lol...that's all it took for Gary to breakout into BIG smiles and lay down some vocal melodies as well as the lyrics "I'm loosing my fulcrum, baby..."...we both had lots and lots of laughs and good times with this one...and we continue to laugh...still:) Loosing being setting free basically or unrestrained not to be confused with losing :)

Gary does SO well...it's such a true pleasure to be able to share
creative space with him...and to continue to create memories and music at the same time :)

He Said: This track is exactly the kind of music I like to make with other musicians who bring cool new texture and Jaime's sons improv kalimba track in the intro was inspired as I had some similar tones later in the track so it seemed a perfect marriage. We love what he did here... I also love the vocals Jaime added and her piano is throughout the track. As Jaime said the track has a funny root but the concept is to basically stay focused on your central things of importance with regard to piece of mind in body and soul.  This one has been in the works for a while as I kind of lost the track in another computer for several months...it seems we had to wait for that kalimba first hehe :) Jaime and I had a blast getting the vocals down too trying for a unique flavor.

She said:  this tune started, as most of our tunes do, with a really cool groove that Gary came up with..his musical uniqueness, again, blows me away.....he played around with some synths and what (to me) sounds like strings...but, i'm still not sure what that is...lol...it set the tone/stage for what was to come...he added his signature most awesome guitars that i love so much and then asked me if i wanted to add some piano...unfortunately, due to my crazy life schedule right now and some issues i'm having with my hand...i'm not able to play the piano like i used to or like i like to...fortunately, i have saved some snippets from over the years...and a few of those snippets have found their way into this tune...and, i feel...they fit perfectly :)   I have to thank Gary for everything he does to make our tunes sound so good...from all of the instruments/layers he adds...to the flowing/vocal lines...to the production...he loves what he does...and he does it so well...i wish i had more time to create...and more time to reciprocate musical love with all of you...i miss you all...and hope that all of the beautiful  melodies are still flowing freely from your hearts :)

He Said:Jaime was too busy to write a new piano piece on the spot, so she went through some past work she did and sent it over and I think you will be blown away with the organic groove she played here... its aggressive and effectual, but also has this delicateness. I try to capture her piano in such a way that never takes you away from knowing right away , its Jaime. In this track she brought an almost old west style, player piano vibe, like you might hear in a saloon in the old western US.  Just gorgeous I felt.  

I enjoyed weaving in and around with the guitar. I also love the vocal she was able to record for this, not a lyrical song but more the ambient vocal harmony thing we like doing together... 

As for the mix I was going for an almost lo fi opening that might sound like its in a tube with some outliers of sound poking out to the wider field of sound....then we move into a more robust orchestra/tion section as it then slips into a kind of rock instrumental guitar piece where the mix becomes wider , with more pressure from the bass etc...and hopefully more spread out... once we "permeate" we then slip into Jaimes piano work with vocal ambient touches. She really shines with her harmonies I do believe. Catered more to a headphone type experience with a lot of phasing and layers etc... I dont think there are phasing issues per say but it was meant for the phones :) I also have a few section with some heavy "tension and release" kind of where things nearly go off tune and then get uncomfortable and then slip into tune for the release... I hope it works out :)

She said:  this song started after i received a message from Nick (Spade)...he was speaking of/sharing with me some things and feelings he was going through...and, those things, i could most certainly relate to...i haven't played much piano lately...but, after our conversation, felt compelled to go to the keys...to allow the emotions/feelings i was feeling at that time to come out..through music :)  

music, to me, is freeing (emotionally)...it allows me to say/speak through melodies...the title of this piece is "Free"... for a few different reasons.....no metronomes/played free...

i have to thank Gary for bringing this piano piece to a whole different level for me...with the added ambience, choir and beautiful pads/synths gliding so smoothly underneath...he always loves the piano melodies that come out of me...and i appreciate that so very much...

and to Nick...from one heart to another...i do hope you enjoy this piece...

We Say: We started this base track out and I kept thinking "Oh this would sound so cool with Dave and then another section I thought the same of Nick... this not being our first collab with Nick and Dave , it had been a while and to our happy surprise they both agreed to go all in with us on this one, and I got to say I am really into what they both played here and how they interpreted each the vibe of the song. Dave with his melodic and emotive playing style and musical instincts plays here with a mysterious buildup to a crescendo that brings some goosebumps up the spine.. When you hear Dave play you know that distinctive tone and style. We associate it with quality and talent. 

Then we move into Nicks taking the frets for a very sort of avant garde rhythm section he played as the solo literally rips in at virtuoso rate and yet maintains this very cool and addictive swell and sort of mini melodies around the plateaus. its mesmerising to listen to but also musically pleasing in our humble opinion. The cleanliness of the fretwork is of note yet maintaining a free flowing "ok where the heck are we going here" kind of thing... I love it !!

I think also everyone will enjoy the piano intros and outros that Jaime J Ross played for the track both interpreting essences of each of Nick and Dave's performances in and around the track and we really had a great time as this piece of music built over time :) Jaime always has a beauty and distinctiveness in her piano work...

We Say: This tune started out with an acoustic session with Cameron (Jaimes son), and we were glad we recorded it as he plays so beautifully we feel... it was all first take and the guitar inspired Jaime to sit down on the piano and come up with the intro,  from which we sort of built the track around those two phrases. 

The tune is meant invoke a hopeful mind as well as to try to bring you around from a relaxing sense to a bit of tension and drama (to get the flow going) and then with any luck, by the end you will have a smile on your face a little bit...

It seemed like it was time to get the fellas back together for a blast. Sometimes your working on a track and you can hear certain other musicians in parts in your head, and I had this track with some conventional bass and also some synth bass and a bit of a vocal vibe and I passed it over to Dave and Nick to see if they were interested and to my excitement they both were, and so I just said where i might imagine them, but they also took together and worked out the outgoing sections in a wild way that I think those who love their guitar playmanship will really appreciate and how it goes down...

Big Praise and appreciation to Nick and Dave for their amazing interpretations and instrumentation on this track. Please be sure to check them both out on their clouds

Dave starts off the track with an amazing complimentary groove and then rips into and amazing uplifting solo... all his talents and gifts on full display then he hands off the Nick who serenades us with some voice box goodness into a rip your face off solo, bringing them both together in the end with a very unique set of dissonant guitar sections (with a stomp here n there) that also compliment as they fuse together into the sweeping bow sounds of Nick to take us out... love it!!

I had been working on this track and had recently heard Nick do a cover recently of a classic Zep track and I already knew he could sing from so when I was working on this track again it clicked that Nick might enjoy singing on it.. When I think of Nick I think of amazing guitar work, and spontaneous explosions of sound in that realm.,.. 

Now also as a very powerful voice with his vocals. When Nick said yes I was excited to hear what he might do... I told him to do whatever he wanted and have fun with it... I think the performance is super powerful and ALL Nick... I never like to compare but when I was mixing etc, I swear I would hear reminders of many singers I grew up with... I was taken by the amount of power Nick sang with but stayed dialed in ... I also think much of this performance was one take inspiration, but Nick would need to comment on that. Such a pleasure to work again with Nick as we just worked on another instrumental guitar track with he and Dave, so it was cool this came up and was able to pass it over to him...Love it Nick !! Cheers
