Alongside co-founding One Records, Subb-an has been producing killer dancefloor groovers for years, releasing on some of the best club focused labels around. Releases on Eastenderz, Pleasure Zone, Fuse and Crosstown Rebels have made him a name synomous with deep and minimal grooves of all shapes and sizes. Recent collaborations with Thoma Bulwer on Constant Black and Seven Hills, as well as working with our shop's own Luther Vine for a release on his 2020 Vision sublabel Fragments of Reality, have been glued to our turntables since they dropped, so when a chance came to highlight his skills on the decks we were over the moon!
 
This mix opens with lush and deep tracks, slowly building in atmosphere and energy as the mix pulses and grows into a unique blend of Minimal Tech House with shades of proggy euphoria and throbbing basslines.

Phonica Mix Series 94: Subb-an

Ahead of NorthSouth Records’ 5th birthday in Room 2, label co-boss Sam Bangura delivers us a dreamy and pulsating 1.5 hour mix – an apt showcase of the label co-boss’s bold yet sparse signature sound.

Sam’s well on his way up, his debut 12-inch Hullabaloo last year was an edgy take on contemporary tech-house, and more recently his Brainsurfers - HMSB EP with our resident and fellow NorthSouth boss Harry McCanna, arrived to critical acclaim and a warm response reflective of the textural and airy sonics that float through both sides of the release.

“Celebrating 5 years of NorthSouth at fabric is massive for us, it’s the place that the three of us have probably spent more time clubbing than anywhere else, and hosting NorthSouth there has been a dream for us since the label was born. This mix is part of my interpretation of the NorthSouth sound, flowing through a number of styles and moods, hopefully locking the listener into a groove to lose themselves wherever they may be for a chunk of their day…” – Sam

We can’t wait to see what he does in the booth next weekend alongside fellow label heads Harry and Dale Mussington, special guests Oshana (Live) and Digby and fabric mainstays Raresh and Craig Richards.

When you have been in the game a certain length of time milestone come around a lot and for our marquee 150th edition of our main podcast we welcome Mike Shannon. In operation since the turn of the millennium, Mike is a firm favourite in most reaches of the electronic realm. His seminal imprint Cynosure is also coming up hot on their landmark 100th release and the Canadian is nowhere near slowing down as the 85th release and his ‘Galactica’ EP is about to drop on your door step. His approach to music is all encompassing, from the way in which he crafts his music using a myriad of modular kit, to his residency at Club Der Visionaere, and of course traversing the globe lighting up dance floors where ever he goes. Next up in our longstanding mix series we are delighted to showcase a man who could be described as a pioneer of house music. Brawther has been steadily casting a spell upon the genre for many years now, his music having been championed by the likes of Kerri Chandler, Ron Trent, Chez Damier and Jeremy Underground. He has released music on a far reaching number of record labels including the likes of Cabinet Records, Secretsundaze, My Love Is Underground, Balance and Jazzy Couscous. He has built a firm following amidst house and techno communities and has toured with relentless pace in recent years with a reputable string of appearances worldwide. 

This set was recorded at a special location in Berlin and was captured live from the booth at Club der Visionaere. For those of you who have been previously then you will note the nature of the sound, setting and place in the utmost detail. For those who have not, close your eyes and imagine.

Following a break in our mix series after what can only be described as very a strange year for everyone, we were blown away by this amazing mix of house and techno. Never breaking his groove, @northsouthrecords boss and very much a big part of the Gottwood family after years of service and also recently releasing his track "Fun Dome" on our Gottwax label, @sambangura delivers in a big way!

Explaining his thinking behind the recording, Sam explains "Seeing as we couldn’t enjoy the magic of Gottwood this year I wanted to bring some of it to everyone through this mix. Imagining the sun shining next to the lake as day turns to night, I hope this goes some way to recreating that!"

Head of NorthSouth Records and resident DJ at Half Baked, Sam has been an ever growing force on the London scene playing alongside the likes of Francesco Del Garda, Jane Fitz and Samuel Deep and continued to evolve in 2020 with a much acclaimed production debut. He will be bringing his prized wax collection for a double outing with us at Junction 2 and ION Festival this summer.
