Bonjay set the spine a-tingle with basement rattling tunes set to vocals that stand the hairs on end. Born out of Ottawa's legendary Disorganised parties, what began as a simple crowd pleasing party lark has developed into a serious commitment to songwriting and production, including remixes for labels like Mad Decent, Ninja Tune and Ghetto Arc (XL Recordings).
Drawing their name from Spice Island slang for “good god!”, singer Alanna Stuart and multi-instrumentalist Ian ‘Pho’ Swain have opened for bands such as Twin Shadow, tUnE-YarDs, Glasser, as well as playing alongside club acts Kid Cudi, Diplo, South Rakkas and Kingdom – a mix that fits a unique proposition of dancehall innovation, twisted pop sentiments, and R&B hooks. It’s an unlikely mix, but one that makes sense coming from two strong, contrasting personalities brought together in one of the world’s emerging melting pots.

Their debut UK salvo is the two tracker of Stumble/Creepin. Both songs are lifted from their Broughtupsy EP (pronounced "brought-up-see") and comes from a West Indian patois for “well raised”, i.e. how you were brought up. We like that sentiment almost as much as the format that is tethered to the aforementioned single which will be a highly treasured Bonjay-appointed hand-crafted notebook with accompanying download code, and also stand alone digital download.

‘Stumble’ is a tune so big that its hook is played by an air horn. Propelled by a rising chant and insistent bass, it’s a song about that first party you went to that really blew your mind. As Ian explains. “Alanna and I met at Disorganised. I started the night up with some friends at about the same time as The Rub, Hollertronix and TRASH were starting up. It seems like a similar party was starting up in pretty much every city, it was just the feel of the time. Playing music from across the board, all the different scenes mixing at one party – it was such a fresh idea. That era is definitely over now but we wanted to eulogize it. Making their UK debut this May at key London club shows and at The Great Escape, Bonjay are primed to be the name people are talking about. Their phenomenal transformation of Caribou’s Swim album standout ‘Jamelia’ hints at their potential.

Alex Klimovitsky (vocals, drums, keyboard) and Sebastiano Ferranti (bass), originally from New York and London, have already caught the attention of NME, Drowned In Sound and CMU - and their songs are refreshing for their direct simplicity. It’s a signature style that led the A New Band A Day blog to name Youthless its favourite band of 2010. 

This is the original demo of ‘Good Hunters’ - fresh, lithe and full-to-bursting all at once.  A studio version was recorded for the Portuguese label Enchufada and produced by ambassadors of the Angolan dance genre kuduro, Buraka Som Sistema. The studio version of ‘Good Hunters’ soared to number four on the Portuguese MTV charts. 

This demo version was recorded in a basement in Lisbon on an old Akai 4-track, and completed in a bedroom in west village of New York. “We mess around with whatever old and weird stuff we have in whatever practice room we’re in,” says Sebastiano. It’s such that the main hook - which sounds like a dirty synth - is actually a classic guitar played through an oddball array of distortion pedals.

The lyrics describe a relationship from infant beginnings to an inevitable end, comparing two lovers to prehistoric hunter-gatherers of affection and security. “I wrote the lyrics a few hours before we recorded them, on the subway from my ex-girlfriend’s apartment,” Alex explains. Upon realising that their supply of emotional sustenance has run dry, they are forced to split and search for what they need elsewhere - although they are still connected at the hip from their time surviving together.

Youthless are a Portugal-based (and NYC/London-born) two-piece who are currently bathing in a sea of praise following a storming appearance at In The City in Manchester. The band comprise drum, synth and vocal extraordinaire Alex Klimovitsky and Sebastiano 'the riff machine' Ferranti.

Their mix of garage-rock and dance - with just two bodies at their disposal - proved one of the festival's biggest breakthroughs. Youthless have previously reached number four on Portuguese MTV, and supported The Horrors and Crystal Castles. They make a snappy, dancey racket somewhere between Male Bonding, T. Rex and DFA 1979, using two voices, a drum kit, a keyboard and a bass guitar hooked up to some 12 pedals.

After a childhood split between Nigeria and the Netherlands, Olugbenga now resides London's East End. His first taste of international attention came as one of the vocalists in dubstep/folk outfit Various Production whose 2006 album for XL Recordings was one of the first dubstep releases to sell in five figures. Eighteen months ago Olugbenga was drafted into electronic pop/indie band Metronomy as a bassist/vocalist and was quickly asked to become a permanent member of the group. The band have played to rapturous audiences in Europe, North America, Australia and Japan, and released two albums to enormous critical avail. 

Olugbenga is also beginning to make a name for himself as a DJ and remixer. Working purely on a laptop (and not turntables) and drawing influences from contemporary Nigerian music, left-field electronica, gospel and rock, Olugbenga's approach to the cut-and-paste (or mash-up) technique popularised by DJs like Girl Talk yields truly singular results. It has  brought him to the attention of BBC Radio 1 who featured one of his mixes on the Huw Stephens show. He has also received support from influential music websites like Drowned In Sound.
