onedotsixtwo heads to São Paulo by way of the very talented Carla Cimino who has created two sensuous tracks in ‘Fractal’ and ‘Illusion’, while Australia’s Mike Rish delivers a stunning remix of the title track.

Carla Cimino has been directly involved with electronic music and the underground scene in her native São Paulo since the early 2000’s, and began producing her own material almost ten years ago. In that time she has released on many quality imprints such as Warung Recordings, Culprit and BC2 Records gained support from DJ’s far and wide, including Hernan Cattaneo, Hoj, Madloch, Chris Fortier and many more. 

The EP opens with Fractal. Pulsating bass envelops the listener from the offset. Shimmering shakers and congas dance between sustained chords, and ethereal voices build tension amongst plucked strings. A track that would sit equally comfortably during the build of a set, or late into the night. Illusion is next with an addictive groove, razor sharp hats and mesmerising chimes, leading to a break full of excitement and anticipation, and onward to a release worth every second of the build. Mike Rish makes his mark on Fractal and what a mark it is. He takes the key elements of the original and adds a big dose of peak energy using powerful builds and sweeps layered amongst thunderous reverberating FX, while accentuating the string elements. Continuing to ride a tidal wave of success, progressive house phenom Alex O'Rion returns to Cid Inc's Replug Records with ‘Space Age'. Rising out of a successful career as a trance producer, Dutch artist Alex O'Rion took inspiration from the likes of John Digweed, Nick Warren and Sasha, to forge a path into the world of progressive house. Alex's groovy melodic sound found its footing quickly thereafter, as he notched releases via Nick Warren's Hope Recordings and Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music. Moving forward, 2020 proved to be a breakout year for the Nijkerk resident. On the strength of projects for Replug and The Soundgarden, Alex rose to Beatport's #3 best-selling progressive house producer, paving the way for 2021 releases via Guy J's Lost & Found and UK behemoth Anjunabeats. Now as 2022 takes shape, Alex continues his fruitful relationship with Replug, presenting a third and much anticipated artist showcase for the label entitled ‘Space Age'.

EP opener and title selection ‘Space Age' finds Alex operating at the peak of his creative powers. Fuelled by rhythm and groove; it's wobbly basslines and flickering percussive arrangements resonate on a transcendent level. Fluid and trippy across the first movement, Alex continues his stylized ways with timely vocal fragments and supernatural effects creating a colourful path into the main break. Sitting comfortably in an ethereal yet thought provoking space, submerged beats rise out of intoxicating atmospheres as the interlude evolves, eventually spearheading a groove-centric drop and mystical finale.

Rounding out the release is ‘Aperon' which lands with an equally impressive display of craftsmanship. Alex reaffirms his instinctive ability to tip a dancefloor over the edge, planting multiple explosions of serotonin through wavy melodies, clustered effects and disorientating projections. Clever co-actions make for a break that is both surreal and tense, flowing through undulating rhythms and cascading melodies, before confidently returning to the groove for a sweeping aerial finale.

With ‘Space Age' Alex continues his journey across the electronic cosmos, presenting two crushingly catchy productions steeped in colourful musicality and thought-provoking atmospherics.

An iconic figure within the underground dance fraternity for over a decade, Rich Curtis makes his Meanwhile debut with an iconic track in the shape of “Square Root (’21 Salute)”.

Rich Curtis has been a regular on an array of blue-chip labels over the course of a stellar career which has seen releases on Sudbeat Music, Tulipa Recordings, Proton Music and Replug. Indeed, it was the Cid Inc. owned imprint that Curtis made his 2010 debut with “Square Root”. Now reprising the track with a 2022 makeover, the “(’21 Salute)” is a rich and textured affair that retains all the melodic hallmarks of the original while updating the sound with beautifully woven new motifs and sparking arpeggio. Sounding bright and warm in the spring sun, Rich Curtis has breathed new life into his renowned track.

Another artist with an impressive portfolio of music to his name and reputation to match, Alex O’Rion has found his work allied to a host A-list imprints including the likes of Replug, Sudbeat Music and Guy J’s Lost & Found. A regular contributor to Meanwhile with 2021’s “Echium” EP and remixes for GMJ & Matter’s “Gauntlet”, The Dutch master returns to the label with a typically evocative offering. Making beautiful use of Curtis’ original components they are complemented with a slew of additional production material that extends his remix with spine-tingling new melodies that blossom in the breakdown and second half. A hefty rhythmic backdrop and ticking percussive groove add further to the powerful new interpretation.

Returning to remix duties on their ever-growing and increasingly popular label, GMJ & Matter once again feature on Meanwhile with a dazzling new reworking. Continuing an illustrious run of original and remix production credits that have helped shape their label, the Australian duo have cemented their reputation as elite progenitors of the modern progressive house sound. Sprinkling magic dust all over “Square Root (’21 Salute)”, a trademark groove immediately provides dancefloor desirability while new melodic patterns wander in beautifully coruscating patterns across the 8-minute plus offering. Themes resonant with Rich Curtis’ original are infused throughout, but GMJ & Matter’s skill is to turn them into distinct variations that evolve and develop with gloriously textured soundscapes.

The final remix sees Luka Sambe return to Meanwhile. An artist with a triple century of production credits to his name dating back to 2013, Luka Sambe has seen his reputation and stature grow strongly in equal measures. Winning plaudits for releases on a string of high-profile labels, music for Balance Music, Lost & Found and Sudbeat Music has seen the Australian consistently find himself in the upper echelons of the progressive and organic house charts. Now following up September 2020’s “Alive is the Meaning” and the “Spy Games” EP on Meanwhile Horizons a year later, the Luka Sambe remix glistens with a silky melodic sheen that sees its origins in Rich Curtis’ original while intelligently creating a new path. Familiar arpeggios shimmer atop pulsating new pads and twinkling synth phrases that come to the fore at the breakdown before opening up in the third movement. A deep sub-bass groove and flowing rhythmic backdrop complete a mesmerising sonic picture.

Cid Inc's Replug Records welcomes Nopi back to the label for his first solo project. Ukrainian artist Nopi brings a surreal beauty to his innovative brand of electronic composition. His colourful synth leads, exotic percussive arrangements and smooth, dancefloor minded grooves have made for a sound that is all his own. Emerging in 2019, Nopi has enjoyed a three-year creative swell, earning the praise of electronic music tastemakers such as Behrouz, Guy J, Lee Burridge, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Sebastian Leger and more; while All Day I Dream, Do Not Sit and TRYBESof have served as landing spots for his transcendent sound. Having made his Replug debut in 2020 with a collaborative project alongside progressive music star Dmitry Molosh, Nopi now returns to the trailblazing imprint for his first solo effort entitled ‘Nature In The Home'. 

Continuing to tread the waters between progressive and organic house, Nopi leans closer to the former on first track ‘Nature In The Mountains After Mushrooms'. A dizzying dance floor slam powered by potent kick drums and hyperspace effects. Rather than burst into a whirlwind or electronic symphony, Nopi delivers tension through slow burn repetition, dodging expectations and emphasizing his conceptual charm, painting bucolic scenes of solitude, as hypnagogic effects unveil a semi-conscious dreamland, before the Ukrainian's creative attitude reveals itself during an interlude of colourful synth swagger and mesmerizing progression. 

Beneath the powerful tidal waves of 'Nature In The Mountains After Mushrooms' lies the spellbinding realities of 'Mistake Forest'. Packed to the hilt with drama and emotion, its adventurous spirit is something Nopi relishes in, as he flexes a trance-inducing side of his studio repertoire. A genuine exchange of melody and texture provide the narrative, where themes of introspection and hope get translated by fuzzed out vocal fragments, thought-provoking musicality and machine-gun style grooves. 

Continuing on a similar monochrome are the nostalgic qualities of the collection's final selection 'Capadocia'. Profoundly idyllic, it's a composition that further cements Nopi's elusive vision, as its buoyant beginnings morph into a meditative, consciousness-expanding conversion of musical ideas. Dark rebounding rhythms and rolling basslines set the course for rustic hooks, prismatic effects and metallic arps, which ultimately puts a stamp on this thematic collection from one of progressive music's rising mavericks.

A long-time friend of Meanwhile and regular contributor to GMJ & Matter’s label, Simos Tagias returns once more with the twin-track “Archaios / Geometric”.

With over 400 production credits to his name for some of the finest modern imprints, Simos Tagias has regularly found an outlet for his distinctive brand of progressive house through the likes of Sudbeat Music, Mango Alley and Proton Music. Making a sizeable impression with his debut outing on Meanwhile, the sonic diptych that constituted “Euphoria / Emotion” in March 2021 showcased an immaculate sonic collage that shimmered and glistened with melodic beauty. Remixes from Paul Deep and GMJ & Matter followed in April 2022, while Simos also found himself back on the Meanwhile catalogue with remixes of Imran Khan and Alex O’Rion in late 2021 and early 2022.

Opening his latest original EP, “Archaios” is driven by a powerful rhythmic bedrock that generates club-friendly groove and bassline prowess before shape-shifting pads drift across the mid-range. Subtle motifs gradually enter the fray, exposed fully in the intoxicating breakdown where white-noise risers and open filters provide an epic crescendo. Hitting its straps in the second half, fully evolved melodic sequences jockey for prominence alongside textured chord sequences and driving percussive force. The result is the perfect illustration of modern and emotive progressive house.

A whip-cracking kick and chunky top-line groove anchor “Geometric”, while a pitched synth effect immediately piques interest. Dropping easily into its second movement, bassline and rhythm supply the perfect backdrop for a plucked motif to hypnotise with its delicately evolving character, while a heavily side-chained pad pulsates in cadenced waves and adding to expansive sonic landscape. Pausing for breath at a beatless breakdown, the track effortlessly drops back into its mesmerising combination of revolving motif and heavy rhythm as effects and pads generate an almost transcendental state of bliss as “Geometric” plays out.

With consummate ease, Simos Tagias sculpts a new sonic masterpiece in “Archaios / Geometric”.
