Drill / Wire Magazine / Below The Radar Vol 14 / Aug 2013

In 1989 dancer Michael Clark approached Josie Jones and Jake Walters of Big Hard Excellent Fish to write a piece of music for his forthcoming work with the Phoenix Dance Company. Josie Jones, formerly of Pete Wylie’s Mighty Wah! asked Pete to work with them on this and the ‘Imperfect List’ was born: a sober, chilling – and very heartfelt cry and denouncement of Britain’s then-ill’s.

Michael’s choreography with the Phoenix Dance Company was performed at Sadler’s Wells and the track also featured in the South Bank Show’s documentary about him.

The track was subsequently re-recorded with Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins and released as a 12” in 1990 with a remix by Andy Weatherall. In 2004 the track found a new audience when Morrissey began using it to open his shows – which he continues to do to this day.

After many requests in subsequent years to ‘update’, it was not until 2011 when approached by One Little Indian that Big Hard Excellent Fish decided that the time was right – the political climate not that different from that of the 1980’s. Infact not that much has changed at all: Religion, Greed, Murdoch, WMDs, Hate Crimes, the Banking Crisis, Child Poverty, crooked Judges, Jeremy ‘Wanker’ Clarkson… And The Question Remains: Where Were You..?

‘And The Question Remains’, written by Josie and Ian C is accompanied by two very different alternate versions – the Silver Bullet version with music by Erik Legrang & Nina Walsh and the Rootmasters version with music by Ian C & James Clancy.

Bjørn Torske returns to our shores with a stone cold classic under his Krisp moniker. The tracks "Farlige Fiffus" and "Fraktor" was originally released on the legendary Footnotes label in 2001 making this a timely comeback 22 years later. For anyone owning an original copy the mastering lacked a bit of power and volume. This has now been rectified by Klas "Sasse" Lindblad's new mastering and you'll now get a chance to play these dancefloor monsters as loud as they deserve.

Él, lo sigue intentando, sobre todo y ante todo porque no tiene otra cosa mejor que hacer que estar todo el puto día enredado.

You will know him, if anything, as David the fish; the one that he has been giving a blast for more than 13 years in electromagnetic radio, mixing the Music for Whales sessions and now also giving a blast in Música para whales; It is impossible not to hate him because he loves him so much.

Here he offers us a clinic on how to mix various styles at 110-170 bpm that could be put in DJ schools if there were any at the level of the musical selection, if you don't believe it, then press play. Two cult entities rejoin for today's offering. Renowned minimalist wizard, Gigi Masin, and downtempo savants, Tempelhof, are elegant music-makers in their own right. But come June 10th, they cross swords for a joint outing entitled Tsuki — arriving via Cascine in North America and Hell Yeah Records elsewhere.

The former is a living sample bank for artists as far-flung as Bjork, Main Attraktionz and Nujabes, as well as playing a crucial role in Italy's avant-garde thrust. Despite only releasing a handful of releases — one solo album (Frozen Dancers), a 12” single (Piano Piano) and another joint LP with Masin (Hoshi) — Tempelhof (Luciano Ermondi and Paolo Mazzacani) weigh in with considerable gravitas among those in the know. Together, they're the perfect embodiment of career cryogenics — creatives whose artistry has received a rightful second lease of life via well-placed reissues.

Tsuki is a lesson in tasteful ambience, melding episodes of weightless wonderings with forays into percussive, softly-softly electronica. The project is pinned by the hip to each artists' respective homelands of Venice and Mantua, making for a well-travelled and emotional jaunt into minimalism. 

"Corner Song" is just that; almost otherworldly in nature, but atmospheric and deeply stirring. The perfect introduction to a project that's bound to cause souls to salivate.

When the sun goes down and the Moon comes up. Well. In this case Moon is courtesy of fellow djs Johannes Albert & Johannes Paluka (aka Iron Curtis). They joined forces in the Musikstudio long time ago and after two bangin' maxi singles it's time to go full length. 
Their debut LP is entitled "Industrie & Zärtlichkeit" and it's a journey into all things small. Rough sketches sprinkled with red melodies and swinging lose drum machine loops. Trying to find at least some beauty in darker things? Certainly. Nine tracks between classic electro (more Detroit less Berlin we assume), calm ambient textures and even a slight chance of euphoria (see "MFB Nights" for reference). Comes attached with two remixes. Black Spuma in a "Metro Area" vain and Lerosa here goes "The Cure" all the way.

So in trve Maiovvi fashion after releasing an LP of oversaturated occult electro bangers on Bunker Records I decided to make an Italo mix, cause even though you fashion pricks have abandoned it in favour of whatever it is you "love" now, I still think Italo is great AND it's summer time so you can go get yourself an iced cream and then go do a ton of disco dust in a portable toilet and dance the night away before drowning youself in a lake of Club Mate and bad luck... Or walk around in the rain like I'm preparing to do, dreaming of being on a beach somewhere and not being so god damn broke.
