Tango

What if Bajofondo had been born 50 years earlier and had been composing in the golden age of  tango. This short piece has been written to illustrate a musicality lesson at Bramshaw working with the contemporary electro-tango Pa' Bailar. On hearing that some dancers were dismayed that the class would be working with a non-traditional tango, I wanted to help dancers discover that beauty can also be found in the layers of the music. I think Pa Bailar's simple and haunting melody would have been the pride of a 1950's composer. Yes, perhaps it is beaten into submission by the heavy drum and bass accompaniment but, never-the-less it is part of the musical work. It is possible for a dancer to filter out the heavy rhythm and dance to this beautiful melody.

Some songs just happen...I'm on the way home from the recording studio, (perhaps 2003) its December, about 2am, there's no traffic and I'm waiting for a short eternity at a traffic light watching the snow fall through the street lights, and by the time the light turned green, the song was basically written.

Taking someone's name as a starting point, I turn the letters of their name into musical notes. We already have A thru G assigned in both music and alphabet. The rest of the alphabet is assigned by making H thru N a repeat of A thru G.

Using this method, my name STEVE becomes the notes E F E A E

Accidental sharps and flats are added as I try and find a way to let the notes find their way to their 'home' key. My name wanted to go D major when the F was sharpened.
