Making his Meanwhile return on GMJ and Matter's first release of 2023, Ivan Aliaga presents his "Sami" EP where four original tracks combine with a single remix from Sebastian Sellares.

A growing Argentinean artist who first debuted on 3rd Avenue in mid-2019, Ivan Aliaga has already seen a swathe of releases featured on the likes of Mango Alley, Beat Boutique and onedotsixtwo. Returning after a July 2022 debut on "Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 2", the "Sami" title track is a chunky rhythmic jewel that immediately captures the attention with its spot effects and steam-powered white noise fills. A muted melody gradually filters into range over its 8-minute as arpeggio and vocal cut add to the rich collage of sound. "Simetrica" continues the hefty rhythmic foundation as a panoply of delayed voices, whispered textures and strong bass groove add texture. Swooping pads add intrigue and a smooth progression at the breakdown creates emotion before the track explodes again in the second half.

The delicate arrangement of "Futura" quickly appeals with its atmospheric swells and beautiful melodies. A delayed motif provides a distant echo from Sasha's "Airdrawndagger", while a rapid-fire hi-hat pattern supplies dancefloor urgency. With metronomic rhythmic precision, the track continues with coruscating melodic ease in the second half to create a perfect juxtaposition. The final original track finds, "Animatica" evolving through use of pulsating pads and mirrored groove pattern. Hitting a rousing crescendo at the breakdown courtesy of ethereal pads and whispering voice, the driving rhythmic forces of earlier movements drives the track onwards to it conclusion.

A Meanwhile regular, April 2021's "Dunes at Dawn" EP and a pair of remixes sees Sebastian Sellares returns to the label after February 2022's remix of Alex O'Rion's "The Serpent". Reworking the title track, the Argentinean star makes intelligent use of the themes resonating through "Sami" as a hypnotic rhythmic bedrock provides the perfect foundation for smooth melodic lines to flow gently across the piece. Trademark motifs and counterpoint phrases swell gently towards a rousing breakdown, where new melodies and additional production material converge in a wondrous sonic storm. Melody and rhythm then combine in the second half to mesmerising effect.

With ice-cool precision and a crystal-clear sonic vision, Ivan Aliaga finds a new world of sound within "Sami".

Based in Melbourne, the Aussie duo have been beloved figures in the global progressive house scene for over a decade. Having forged a distinctive sound which focuses on inventive use of melody and rhythm, the duo has drawn the lines between global dance cultures without adhering to any fixed formula. Whether operating in solo capacity or as a duo, GMJ and Matter have taken their elusive production touch to the industry’s most esteemed imprints. From Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and UK behemoth Anjunadeep, to Australia's long-standing Balance Music and their own burgeoning Meanwhile imprint, it’s GMJ and Matter’s storytelling style that continues to surprise and inspire even the genre’s most discerning trendsetters. Replug has also served as a landing spot for the talented Aussie’s, with the release of Matter’s ‘Satori’ EP marking his label debut in 2017, while GMJ first arrived in 2016 with a contribution to the label’s Replugged, Vol. 2 collection. Now, fresh off their latest Meanwhile vehicle ‘EXT 135’, GMJ and Matter land back on Replug to begin the new year with ‘Metanoia’.  

 As a recent favourite of Replug boss Cid Inc, EP opener and title selection 'Metanoia' finds GMJ and Matter composing with a strong sense of space. Instantly seductive, its looping hypnotism and subtle musicality never fail to command your attention, driving each other into a whirlpool of spiralling emotions, making for a flexible club track that bends between scenes while injecting vibrant energy into the dancefloor. Rich atmospheres, effervescent percussion and dubbed out tones are at a premium across the eight-minute excursion, with each sound being an event in a slowly expanding landscape, zooming out to reveal a world of scale in which depth and contrast coax perfectly with rhythm and melody.  

 Moving forward to selection two, GMJ and Matter masterfully synthesize their talents into one singular meditative vision that is 'In Bloom'. Building with a subdued pulse, its smoky resonance eventually gives way to melodic experimentation, where textural and structural dimensions blanket subterranean wobbles and tightly knit percussion, resulting in a profound mood setting experience. Thematically distinct throughout, the duo’s misty melodies are haunting and highly memorable, ringing out in timeless suspension across a mood lifting break, before segueing into a utopian finale that resonates with a rare combination of hope and reflection. 

 The 'Metanoia' project is a fantastical journey across a vivid electronic cosmos, one where GMJ and Matter carefully balance technical vision, with thought-provoking musicality and elaborate rhythmic sequences, making for a two-track affair that brings us closer to knowing the enigmatic duo, while continuing to live in the mystery of their design. Continuing a strong spring season, Madloch's Sound Avenue welcomes FJL back to the label for his debut EP. Having made his Sound Avenue debut last year with a contribution to the label's popular ‘Correlation' series, FJL now makes a welcome return to the Belgian imprint for his first artist showcase entitled ‘Downlifter'.

FJL - Uplifter [Sound Avenue]

In July 2022, Juan Deminicis released another in a long list of sparkling EPs on Proton Music. Showcasing all his production talent on the twin-track "Cycles", we return to the EP with remixes from a pair of Argentinean stars.

From the O'Brien province of Buenos Aires, Paul Deep has carved out an impressive name for himself with his distinctive sounding ‘fusing nuances of deep, progressive and techno'. A renowned DJ across his homeland, the Argentinean's production credentials are no less impressive with music signed to the likes of Meanwhile, Tale & Tone and Sudbeat Music. A single EP in the shape of September's "Orchid" was a notable Proton Music highlight in 2022 as Paul Deep now returns with a scintillating interpretation of "Cycles". Built up on a powerful rhythmic framework, melodic fragments from the original filter into the track along with familiar pads. Before long, new components make their presence felt as a muted arpeggio paves the way for a sumptuous lead motif to reveal itself. The various melodies then shine at a beatless breakdown before dropping back into a sultry bassline groove in the latter stages, full of dancefloor sensibilities.

Another Buenos Aires based artist, Lisandro has been a powerful figure within the underground dance community since a 2018 debut on his own Flug Lab imprint. Going on to showcase over a half century of credits for his label, other work has featured on the likes of Do Not Sit On The Furniture, Perfecto and Pablo Bolivar's Seven Villas. December 2022's "Traditions" EP revealed a wonderful aural diptych on Proton Music as Lisandro now returns with a typically impressive reworking of "Samhadi". Using Juan Deminicis' original parts to superb effect, familiar vocal cuts and piano motifs coruscate gently over the 6-minute timeframe. Adding a host of new production material, a new arpeggiated sequence cuts through the upper range with ease, sitting easily within existing musical structures. A strong beat and shaker fuelled percussive line add to the interpretation as Lisandro delivers another memorable remix to his production portfolio.

Remixes from Paul Deep and Lisandro have seen Juan Deminicis hit further "Cycles" of success.
