Juicebox Music's 62nd release sees Mike Rish's 3-track EP "The Quest", originally released in late 2021, getting a fresh breath of life with a set of remixes. The Melbourne (Australia) based artist made his debut on our imprint with his deep, yet powerful remix of Simos Tagias' "Black Swan and swiftly followed it up with a magnificient release which earned high praises & support. Mike Rish furthered his sonic mark with releases on GMJ & Matter's 'meanwhile' as well as James Beetham's 'Last Night Music'. To celebrate "The Quest" EP, we called upon Kabi, EMPHI, Haen & MONé to rework all three tracks from the EP - "The Quest", "Enter" & "Tuumla".

First up is Buenos Aires (Argentina) based artist - Lucas Khabie aka Kabi, who makes his return to the imprint after his chart-topping "Lost In Roses" EP with K Loveski. His dreamy and club-effective style caught the attention of the progressive community, namely through his body of work on Nick Warren's 'The Soundgarden', Guy Mantzur's 'Plattenbank' & Mango's 'Mango Alley', to name a few. Releasing quality over quantity, his attention to detail is evident. For his latest offering, Kabi injects his signature style into Mike Rish's "The Quest", turning it into a deep yet driving interpretation whilst retaining the magical melodic moments.

Initially making his appearance on Juicebox Music via our inaugural edition of 'Fables' with his track "Parabol", EMPHI returns to the label for his first remix duty. Better known to his friends & family as Johan Härdin, the Swedish-based artist captivated the audience ever since he launched the EMPHI project in 2020, with one of his first signings being on Yotto's 'Odd One Out'. He's continued to cement his place in the industry with productions on Armen Miran's 'Hoomidaas' & Jelly For The Babies 'One of A Kind', while receiving amazing support from the likes of Cristoph, Ida Engberg, Henry Saiz, Dmitry Molosh & more. Hot off the press, EMPHI retouches Mike Rish's "Enter" to give it more after-hours approach with a fine lesson in energy-restraint that crescendos perfectly at the drop.

The final remix of the pack comes from a collaboration between two Indian artists making their debut on Juicebox Music, meet Haen (aka Sachin Menon) and MONé (aka Sooraj Sivadas). Haen kickstarted his discography with special 4-track electronica "Moved" EP, alongside fellow producer mate - Scarr., on the US powerhouse imprint - 'Monstercat Silk'. While Sachin continues to keep the association strong with the Silk Music family, his electronica-meets-breaks-meets-progressive style also found its place on labels like 'Sommersville', 'Movement Limited' & 'Mango Alley', where he's also co-founded Mango Alley's sister imprint - 'Maldesoule'. MONé, although being newer to the production space, was Juicebox Music's resident DJ & label manager in the beginning stages of the label, making him an integral part of the family. Taking his time to learn the craft of producing, Sooraj launched himself as MONé to express his love of underground electronic music, releasing tracks that range from the depths of deep breaks to raw techno. Teaming up to remix Mike Rish's "Tuumla", Haen & MONé explore a completely new, aggressive & creative direction whilst still paying homage to the original.

Following on from the February 2022 remixes, Meanwhile now returns to Alex O’Rion’s EP as “Echium Remixed, Pt. 2” continues with another trio of outstanding interpretations.

A legendary figure in the world of art, music and underground dance, Roger Martinez has been a central figure with his kaleidoscopic sound and spiritual influences. Music signed to Lost & Found, Replug and his own Higher States have confirmed this status while July 2020’s “Cosmic” was a further notable highlight on Meanwhile. Now returning to GMJ & Matter’s imprint, the Roger Martinez remix of “The Chase” is an uptempo offering that draws on his musical influences with a powerful beat and deep bass groove. Using pitched elements from Alex’s original, vocal cuts shift in stereo-panned glory and epic white-noise risers and infinite delays create a dense swirling atmosphere. Pausing at the breakdown to introduce additional melodic elements, the track then drops back into its hypnotic groove as new melodic motifs create the aptly titled “Interdimensional Remix”.

GMJ & Matter return to their flagship imprint with typical flair and aplomb. Able to point to a rich catalogue of original and remix work in both solo and collaborative guises throughout Meanwhile’s two-year reign at the top of the progressive house charts, the Melbourne based duo provide a powerful and dynamic rendition of the title track. GMJ & Matter have thus taken the effects fuelled “Echium” and transformed it into a dark seething progressive house monster that lurks beneath gently pulsing waves. Serene in its build, delayed synth phrases cascade over each other in endless delay while new melodies twinkle across the mid-range in trademark-soaked reverb and elegantly stratified sonic layers. Maintaining the aural themes sculpted by Alex O’Rion in the original, GMJ & Matter have successfully navigated a new and dynamic path through the beautiful “Echium”.

Imran Khan has cemented a reputation as one of the progressive house fraternity’s leading lights. Almost a double century of production credits has seen remix and original music land on the likes of Mango Alley, Proton Music and Clinique, since a 2016 debut for the latter. Moreover, 2021’s “Push Thru / Horizonz” and “Equinox” have delighted the Meanwhile faithful. Returning for a third remix, the Imran Khan reworking of “The Serpent” is a typically deep and atmospheric affair with huge thumping beat and cavernous bass groove dominating the low end. Capturing the flowing melodic phrasing of the original, pitched synths and pulsating white-noise risers create a thick soup of sound that evolves in bubbling sonic patterns with their origins in Alex O’Rion’s impressive production technique. The resulting marriage of two musical identities finds Imran Khan once again illustrating his impressive production credentials through trademark sound design.

Another musical triptych pays tribute to the sonic diversity found in Alex O’Rion’s music as Roger Martinez, GMJ & Matter and Imran Khan open up in full bloom through the towering “Echium”.

Such a complex and powerful EP comes to us from one of Argentina's most promising music producers, Maximo Lasso! His talent is largely based on the melodies he creates and the variety of grooves that accompany his music. His music is just as much his story.
The EP that Maximo wrote for us is called "Perspective" and it is accompanied by remixers that the whole world is talking about, Not Demure and Sebastian Sellares! The two complete this release with masterful reinterpretations of the original "Lemon Tree" and are a real treat for fans of good grooves, quality melodies and strong progressive and organic house sounds!

Máximo Lasso - Lemon Tree (Sebastian Sellares Remix)

Returning for a further instalment of his long-running series whose first volume appeared in late 2017, Rick Pier O'Neil delivers three new original tracks on "One Side of the Underground, Vol. 6", while remixes come from Colombia and Australia.

Opening proceedings, the bristling bassline groove of "Anki" immediately supplies energy aplenty while heavy beat and atmospheric melodies flow across the 7-minute piece with ease. A hypnotic arpeggio emerges at the mid-point before powering into the second half in dynamic fashion. The lighter melodic air of "Namlus" showcases Rick's production talent as free-flowing harmonies and delicate string motifs join with deep bassline presence to create a rich filmic quality. Plucked synth passages enter the fray post-breakdown where the sonic collage paints a vivid picture. "Tlaloc" continues the oppressive bassline narrative of its partner tracks as shuffling hi-hats add a subtle urgency to proceedings. Pitched analogue synths and a fizzing LFO pattern pierce the mid-range midway, while a coruscating arp pulsates powerfully forwards into the latter stages before ebbing gently away.

A Colombian artist with a rapidly rising reputation, David Barragan is an artist who continues to impress via his Dabeat production moniker. Responsible for a host of production credits on the likes of Anjunadeep, Sprout and Sudbeat Music, his debut solo EP for Proton Music after collaborative work with fellow countryman Kamilo Sanclemente, saw "Equilibrium" illustrate an elegant touch and immaculate sense of rhythm upon its release in May 2022. Returning for his first solo remix, the Dabeat interpretation of "Ixchel" is full of intricate rhythmic flair as cascading rhythms blend with a deep bassline in a smooth new rework. Cleverly using the root melodic phrases from Rick Pier O'Neil's original, a raft of delicate new motifs and production material flows across the latter stages, culminating in a delicious and meandering arpeggio that provides a dance-friendly touch.

Another artist whose stock has risen rapidly among the underground dance fraternity, Zankee Gulati has witnessed a string of impressive releases from his adopted home in New South Wales. Quickly establishing himself in Sydney's club environment, Zankee's production work for the likes of Balance Music, Plattenbank and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, has established the Australian as a driving force. Making his Proton Music debut after a string of releases on Particles, most notably with his 2018 "Breathe" EP, the Zankee Gulati remix builds a new rolling groove around "Imperial" that immediately supplies club-friendly rhythms. Familiar refrains from Rick Pier O'Neil's original flow through the near 9-minute remix while sumptuous pads add new texture. A pulsating white-noise crescendo heralds a driving second half as the iconic main synth motif plays out post-breakdown with hypnotic ease.

Continuing to flourish topside with Dabeat and Zankee Gulati, Rick Pier O'Neil shows his mastery, "One Side of the Underground".

Presenting their fourth release of the year, Antrim’s Or Two Strangers welcomes Juan Sapia and Geronimo Eguiguren to the label for a new single. Hailing from the progressive house hotbed of Argentina, Juan Sapia has enjoyed a steady rise since first emerging in 2017. As a favourite of progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, the Buenos Aires resident has compiled an impressive resume, landing releases on top tier imprints such as Clubsonica, Mango Alley, Sudbeat Music and The Soundgarden. Also calling Or Two Strangers home, Juan made his label debut in 2019 with the ‘Magic Moon’ EP, before going on to appear on Volume 3 of the label’s popular Strangers series in 2021. Meanwhile, Buenos Aires resident Geronimo Eguiguren has also made his mark since first emerging in 2019. Longstanding imprints Balkan Connection, Droid9, Soundteller and more have played host to his groovy progressive sounds. Or Two Strangers affiliate Strangers Beats has also been a landing spot for Geronimo, having notched two releases across 2019-2020. Having previously collaborated on a project for If You Wait, Juan and Geronimo join forces once again for Or Two Strangers with ‘Delorean’, alongside remixes from Antrim and K Loveski.

The release concludes with K Loveski making his label debut with the second and final interpretation of ‘Delorean’. Beloved for his timeless progressive style, the Russian artist lays claim to releases via Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden, Balance Music, Mango Alley and Nature Rec, while also earning the support of Hernan Cattaneo and Guy J across his twelve-year career. Having made his debut on label affiliate Strangers Beats in 2019 with ‘Spinola’, K Loveski now steps up to Or Two Strangers with a gorgeous take on ‘Delorean’.  Smooth and rhythmic throughout, the Saint-Petersburg resident goes deep and groovy for what results in an uplifting eight-minute journey. Percolating synth lines, emerging melodies and rugged chord stabs unite across the first act, perfectly setting up a concise break. Meandering vocal motifs and swirling textures cast a colourful soundscape as the centrepiece evolves, adding a celestial flair as the narrative builds onwards to a thumping drop and energetic finale. A gorgeous interpretation from K Loveski which rounds out an excellent collaborative single from Juan Sapia and Geronimo Eguiguren, an artist duo who continue to build on their creative synergy.

Ending the year in style, Meanwhile celebrates its 39th release with label head-honchos, GMJ and Matter showcasing a 3-track epic in "EXT 135 / Elemental / Time to Space".

Artists who have risen rapidly to secure permanent seats at underground dance's top table, GMJ and Matter excel within the DJ and production arenas. Responsible for some of the most intelligent and atmospheric progressive house music the industry has seen and an ironclad provenance behind them, the Melbourne based duo have been leading lights in their hometown and beyond for more than 15 years. Hugely respected artists in their own rights with over 500 individual production credits each, a century has come within their collaborative partnership.

As such, original gems have included several original EPs for Proton Music, with additional work finding its way onto the likes of Anjunadeep, onedotsixtwo and Balance Music. However, it is on Meanwhile where the Australian duo have joined forces with such style and grace. From 2020's "Lost on Origin", "Gauntlet" and "Eldarin" to 2021's "The Path /Perfect Storm", plus remixes for Alex O'Rion, Rich Curtis and Roger Martinez, GMJ and Matter have been at the vanguard of modern progressive house as they now return for another stellar outing.

"EXT 135" is a fizzing powerhouse of hi-hat percussion and white-noise fills as immaculately filtered melodies emerge from the rhythmic melange alongside a chorus of expertly woven pads. A gentle vocal cut adds a melancholy vibe as the track pauses for breath at the breakdown before blossoming once more into the second half with ease and trademark aplomb.

Continuing the rich rhythmic foundation of its predecessor, "Elemental" develops a stunning rolling cadence and swung percussion that provides the perfect platform for a warm blanket of textured pads and pulsating melodies to emerge. Redolent in delays and effects, a reverse-reverb vocal chant creates tension and variation while a simple motif holds fort in the background, helping rhythm and melody gel across the track's duration.

The final track sees "Time To Space" propelled forwards with cavernous bass groove, ticking percussion and laser beam effects. Evolving elegantly, a sustained pad creates an Underworld-esque backdrop from which a chunky synth motif filters into sonic range before being juxtaposed by a glassy counterpoint phrase. Building through the breakdown, the tracks hits its stride once more in the latter stages with an expansive soundstage and metronomic groove.

Illustrating unrivalled talent and craftsmanship, GMJ and Matter once again conquer the progressive house landscape with "EXT135 / Elemental / Time To Space".
