Self-dubbed freek and underground queer icon Josh Caffé peddles a raw, rough and ready approach to house and techno.

Best known as being the frontman for Paranoid London, Josh's sultry and commanding vocals and powerful stage presence is a core part of what makes the analogue acid and techno outfit tick. He's not stopped there, lending his vocals to releases for Posthuman on Lobster Theremin, alongside Batty Bass founder Hannah Holland and with Lupe on Twirl, to name but a few, but of course, it was only a matter of time before his solo EP would see the light of day.

BLACK MAGIK DAWN PT.1 was released on his own Night Sheen Records in 2018 and, though the label has taken a hiatus, he's since been fuelling his energy into his Love Child imprint, a charity-focused label platforming LGBTQIA+ artists that's an extension of his long-running party of the same name.

More recently, he's been in the studio collaborating on production with Paranoid London member Quinn, on what has formed his latest solo release, According To Jacqueline, a debut single for Erol Alkan's Phantasy imprint.

When he's not on the mic or in the studio, he's channeling the same gritty and jacking sounds that influence his productions into his DJ sets, one of which we're sharing with you today. His Ransom Note mix transports you to a dark and sweaty club; eyes closed, feet stepping, hips gyrating — this is music for the body.

This recording was selected for a guest spot on Dublab Radio, that aired on Saturday, January 29th, 2022 and was accompanied with a brief interview that was lead by Lottie, which is posted here below. 

What has been the biggest challenge and more positive outcome you’ve experienced through extended time at home?

Being alone with my record collection and contemplating how different I am feeling, and considering which slabs of vinyl that I want to spend more time with. Rekindling relationships with certain sonic objects that are saturated with memories and have the power to transport me to a different space.

Thank you for the recording this mix for dublab – I know its been a while since you put a mix into the ether – can you speak about your process?

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and wandered blindly into the void. This recording is a document of a moment in time, while smothered in an atmosphere that is as beautiful as it is ugly. The outcome is a true sonic image that is unmolested, unedited, and honest. An automatic drawing where one action responds to the next without any shadow of a doubt, and then preserved in its total form.

How did you approach the mix, did you have an idea in your mind of how it was going to go – or did you just trust your instinct?

Every time it is like traveling on autopilot with an empty mind that is prepared to accept the laws of chance while powered by an engine of chaos. I am a beacon rupturing from my life experiences. One light turns out, while another one flickers on. It is a very vehement ritual activity that depends on the action of call and response, while embracing the limitations that I set for myself by the tools that I choose to use. There is nothing but blind trust.

A lot of your art focuses on magic, ritual practice – but I would also say storytelling, a lot of the music in this mix, seems to spell some hidden meanings, can you go into any of those?

One of the strongest qualities of music, and all art in general is its subjective nature. Meanings can change continually through an endless scope of variables. The original intent of the artist can be transformed completely by the one that is digesting it. An important character of a successful work of art is its power to present open narratives shrouded in unlimited possibilities. And the closer and harder you look, the more questions will arise.

Only the oldest vines’ first harvests of the year are used for La Planta. Made with bottle fermentation, the discorging is done after 24 months. The extended contact with the lees gives this sparkling wine a fine brioche-like flavors balanced with amazing fruityness. This sparkling wine is left little bit hazy which we are crazy about!

Kansan by birth, Chicagoan by honor, Berliner by chance. Olin has devoted most of their waking life to the
transformative power of The Rave. With several releases on labels such as Argot, Discovery, Nervous,
Night Owl Diner, Detour, and Sound of Berlin, Olin has cast a wide net with their productions, which range
from deep techno to italo disco. Their label, Boundary Monument, aims to capture the various intersections
of their sundry taste. Their DJ sets offer a peculiar pulse and are often expansive uninhibited affairs. Now
Berlin-based, they are a current Refuge Radio resident and are a former longtime resident and booker of
legendary Chicago institution, smartbar.

Welcoming back Melbourne DJ Kate Miller who’s been living in Berlin since 2011. Proving herself at the controls of ://about blank, Panorama Bar, Stattbad etc, she’s now the curator and resident for quarterly party @oscillat_e (this month’s edition boasts an epic lineup of Bufiman, Izabel, Johanna Knutsson, Karen Gwyer and Objekt). She also presents two shows alongside Knutsson on Lichtenberg station Cashmere Radio – broadcasting pensive electronics as Low Power FM and club NRG as High Power FM. Here she’s given us more of the latter, a mangled mix of electro, leftfield and broken techno.
