Rounding out an electrifying year, Sandwell District deliver a mix that both celebrates Bleep's album of the year End Beginnings and pays tribute to the man who helped them get this far. Silent Servant’s discography is a plentiful one and Sandwell shows it in all its colours, ranging from hissing electro to sputtering microbeats to revolving hardcore throb doused in mysterious ambience. Blissful ripples of soft rounded synth melody slowly flow into rebounding beats and slamming dub synths, transformed into tactile laser pulses and howling gusts of distortion. The predatorily strutting bass stabs of Sterile Hand’s ‘The Hunter’ is stealthy EBM under the cloak of night, contrasted by Tropic Of Cancer’s guitar twangs worked into slick yet turbulent percussive sequences Cabaret Voltaire’s ‘Silent Command’ edited into a jittery, woozy lofi dream.

This year’s highly anticipated ‘Live at Cocoon Ibiza’ mix is helmed by techno legend Luke Slater under his Planetary Assault Systems guise. 

As Planetary Assault Systems, UK titan Luke Slater has constantly laid down a blueprint for the future of techno. As a live performer he is a visionary who fuses mind melting minimalism, catchy cyborg funk and cinematic soundscapes that really take you on a trip. He did that once again back in July as part of Cocoon's 20th anniversary season and now the results are laid down on CD for us to relive the magic. 

Over the course of eighty spellbinding minutes, Slater captivates with evocative sci-fi imagery and high class melodic minimalism, smoothly shifting from moments of high pressure drum-funk intensity to uplifting and spiritual passages of cosmic sound and back again. Along the way, he digs deep into his back catalogue to serve up plenty of golden oldies as well as more contemporary cuts, and the whole thing melts together into a timeless set that explores the outer edges of techno with huge amounts of both style and substance. 

Debuting on Cocoon with a rare appearance outside of Slater’s usual labels Ostgut Ton and his own Mote Evolver, a 12” release drops in unison with the mix including four Planetary Assault Systems productions: on one side both 'RAWW’ and 'RUN' are exclusive studio versions, whilst on the flip are live versions of 'Desert Races' and 'Give It Up' featuring live sax by Tim Ower, offering some of techno's finest moments, while the mix itself is an essential testament to the forward looking nature of not only Cocoon Ibiza, but also Luke Slater himself.

After the 10’ appetizer we gave you this summer, here comes the big deal: eight cuts of the new Selección Natural stuff, this time cooked alive, by the four foundational members reunited at Oscar Mulero’s studio, eight hands, four brains and a bunch of hardware and software tools colliding to redefine the standardized sound of today’s techno. Only those who were there in the beginning can understand in depth the sound design and groove of an always-futuristic sound as pure techno is or should be.

For this purpose they get rid of any superficial element, keeping it minimal and functional, starting with the experimental synthetic drones of the first cut Absolute Zero, an ever growing single wave filtered and mangled over the stereo field. Moving forward follows, dry kicks, distorted reduced sequences and subtle percussive elements going in and out wisely. Next audio assault is From out of Nowhere, a continuous synth line that is soon joined by a tremendous kick while mutating in shape and timbre all over the arrangement. 

Future Ride keeps spaces open, with an opaque sound palette in the beginning, spiced from time to time with harsh sweeps and distortion … a roller. Left Behind goes next, showcasing a clean obsessive synth line and building drum elements added progressively. Additional sound layers are added while minutes go on to spice things a bit.

Inverse and perverse acts as an interlude that brings us to the last cuts of this body of work. Rolling on the ground relies on broken distorted beats with diverse noise washes and additional sequences appearing randomly, a great mixing tool for those who know. Modernist Descents closes the collection, with shuffled random synth lines over a traditional kick / hat groove. The sound layers change and evolve constantly to make a super dynamic dance floor exercise.

For November's edition of the EXE Mix Series we present to you an hour long mix from one of the Godfathers of sonic grief: Mick Harris 

Mick 'Mongoose' Harris is known for a number of acclaimed projects in the underground bass music community. With over 30 years under his tactical fishing belt Harris has come to be defined by his uniquely menacing dread-laden sounds with acts like Lull, Fret and of course Scorn. Harris doesn't shy away from telling it how it is with his compositions often meandering into almost lo-fi punk territory. 

More recently Harris has released an EP (Feather) and an upcoming album (Cafe Mor)under his Scorn Moniker for long-time collaborator and US based record label Ohm Resistance.

In this almost schizophrenic mix we're subjected to a cross section of uniquely British counter-culture music styles from d-beat to jungle to dub and even drone. Harris shows off his prowess as a selector not to be presumed.

Alessandro Adriani is the head of @mannequin-label, a producer and DJ. He’s been responsible for a stream of quality releases, both on his label and elsewhere on imprints such as @stroboscopicartefacts, Jealous God and Pinkman. As a DJ his style is flamboyant while functional. Over the course of 60 minutes for his Bleep mix, we get a snapshot of some of the best techno in his crate at the moment.
