Gruesome (Acoustic)

Gus and I started this tune on a late and aimless night messing around with sounds, but mostly just eating snacks and chatting about the bigger picture. A couple days later, I had almost a whole song in my head.

This past year in my life has been a lesson in the pace of change—I’ve felt both as high and as low, and as big and as small as I ever have. It took a while for me to figure how to say it all, but I think I’ve started to catch the sound, and I’m really excited to be able to start sharing new music again.

This one goes out to all the people who have loved me through changes. Thanks for sticking around 🦉

2022 has felt like a recalibration of sorts, and I’ve learned a lot of lessons this past year. Being able to step back and appreciate the constants in my life has allowed me to stay grounded as time unrelentingly continues to move forward. “Thanks for Sticking Around” is an ode to all of those who have continued to support me in my endeavours, both personal and creative.

Music sometimes comes easily to me, and sometimes it’s very difficult to extract—more and more, I’ve come to understand that there is indeed a “way” (perhaps many different ways), but rarely a paved path ending at the destination.

This one was one of the easy times. Writing this song reminded me of the way it all started: short trips where the route forward is obvious, my only job to be sure-footed in and deliver whatever it is I have to deliver. It is a great relief to experience these kinds of day-trips in between more arduous ones fettered with baggage and crossroads and distractions.

The song itself is about dying. I hope it gives you the same comfort and clarity as it gave me.

There is a quote that I swear I read somewhere; I thought it was maybe in a Dostoevsky novel, but I have never been able to track it down. Maybe I just made it up. It’s something along the lines of: “everyone, from time to time, secretly yearns for their own undoing”. It feels good to get in your own way a little bit sometimes—a twisted sort of relief from the pressure of always getting it right.

“‘Chapter’ started off as an instrumental that I wrote while feeling sort of at the page break, the blank space between when one chapter has ended and the next has yet to begin. I pitched the beat to Luca straight, no back-story, and he came back with a vocal idea; I couldn’t totally understand the words in the clip he sent, but loved it anyways. Later when we went over what the song was going to be about and what direction we were going to take it, he told me that the lyrics were about feeling pushed away by Vancouver, and how bittersweet and confusing it is. Somehow we both wrote the song about the same topic, so for me this one is pretty much the icing on the cake of the album.“

"A friend and I once chatted about this song and it made realize how vague and cryptic the lyrics are at face value, while somehow being resonant and evocative at some deeper level. It's such a beautiful song that it almost transcends meaning; it is open to interpretation, but arguably better without it as just a wash of vowels and consonants. This song is one of my favourites to play late at night on the deck or at a campfire. I love the tranquility of the original version, but the way it comes out whenever I try to sing it is always kind of bold and raw. I felt that such an open-ended song deserved another version, so here it is, a little gutsier."

"Fallen started out as this beat that I had gotten stuck on — it was written around a guitar duet and reached this point where it sounded good, but somehow kind of lonely and missing a piece. I didn’t really know how to approach the vocals and it was starting to collect dust in my unfinished folder when I got the opportunity to link up with Chris and floated it his way, just to see what would happen. He totally knew exactly what the song was meant to say and said it—the end product is dreamy and lonely as when it started. It was a real honour to work with Chris on this one; I think he was able to capture something that I felt, but couldn’t really explain properly. I connect it with lying on my back underneath the stars, but it actually happens a lot in life and in love—the paradoxical feeling of falling through space, at the same time as lying at the pit of some sort of vastness (the words fallen/falling are kind of ambiguous in the song to this effect)."

"When I was in the early stages of making this track it was originally just the chord progression with drums. I put it up on my dump account and kind of forgot about it until On Planets contacted me and asked to collab. We decided to make it into something much bigger than my original plan and we really meshed together to make one of my personal favorite tracks I've ever been a part of." - HANZ

"I wrote the lyrics for this song because of a conversation I had with an older friend who experienced some very unexpected and undeserving hardship at a point in his life that most people hope to be able to relax and start winding down. When I am out in the mountains, spitting over the edge of a sheer drop gives some perspective of just how close I am—one step—from complete obliteration. The song is sort of a sober and pragmatic take on the emotionalized and connotative idea of “giving up”. While I tried in many iterations to write an instrumental that reflected that, one day while cruising through Hanz’s sketches/unreleased there was a beat that struck me right away. The straightforward elegance that he captures in his production is perfect, and from that baseline, the song basically finished itself in a matter of days." - OP

Early in 2019 on vacation in Hawaii, my dad and I were chatting over morning coffee about what each of us had been working on — he freshly retired from teaching creative writing, and I recently returned to the On Planets project after about a year in hiatus. I mentioned casually that if he wrote any poems that could be translated into a song, we might try and put a track together. A couple months later he followed up with a piece called Sticks, which really resonated with me, and I immediately knew how the song should sound. After a few iterations, working out some details together and adding a refrain, I felt the track adequately captured the smoldering feeling of the poem.

This all was a stark contrast to my own songwriting process, which is an extremely gradual percolation of abstract thoughts driven by the deliberate assembly of fragmented lines written on scraps of paper and untitled notes on my phone; a crude and convoluted kind of simultaneous construction/deconstruction process that spans months, sometimes years. In this project, I felt somewhat like a translator, making an interpretive rendering of the work of the foremost creative sage in my life. I'm humbled to have the opportunity to collaborate with such a master as he, and humbled that when I read his writing it feels familiar—as if it might have come from my own pen, but infinitely more refined, wise, and impactful.
