DIS:TURBED's newly-founded Identity Records imprint kicks off with a huge bang, bringing through 4 of the Drum & Bass scene's most exciting talents for a dark, subterranean debut EP. Here, we see a selection of upcoming powerhouses go to town on the much-loved minimal sound, namely Recon, Half Cab, Medusa and Hickupz, the latter of which we recently dropped a collaborative Premiere / Free Download with, check that via our 'Free Downloads' playlist. Back to this EP, and we're treated to a masterclass in devilish sonics from Recon, who's kicked up a storm on 'Dark Places'. Fabulously textured and warped, this is plucked straight out of the top-drawer from a producer who's sure to go on to do big things in the scene. Clicky, snappy percs meet sharp, robotic atmospherics in a hybrid of sounds that works perfectly - what an opener.

“Obituary” by Hickupz is a seriously heavyweight tune, fully showcasing the versatility minimalism has. Using the simplicity of stripped back drums, the moody atmospherics shine forth even more and create the brooding vibe of the tune. The effectiveness of the vocal sample that leads into the second drop is not be undersestimated, it’s a surging drop you won’t expect and won’t soon forget!

That deep vibration of bass is a hallmark of DnB, and so is its driving pace. “Mystery Powder” by Half Cab revels in this: the swing of the kick and snare which instantly drags you in, the subterranean reach of the bass tones that threaten to overwhelm your senses, the sudden change of pace brought out by the hat section that sends you into hyperdrive, the hypnotic repetition of the fuzzed out melody which send you to the furthest reaches of space.
