The year begins with a well crafted four track EP from Ewol. Exemplifying minimalism and precision craftsmanship this EP outlines an array of moods moving from free flowing and somber to drown right murky and gully. Scimitar its one of those gully tunes which work as perfect mood setters in the club. Tight and minimal in its construct Scimitar bounces smoothly, turning almost ’junglish’ in the second half as a sinister synth pad keeps the atmosphere apprehensive. A perfect tune for a master MC to work the crowd.

Monty unveils his techno influences in this roller with a lead that playfully changes expression as it opens,closes and filters over the course of the tune. It weaves a seamless story on the dance floor over 16 bar phrases. Minimal drums aptly compliment the hypnotic motif of the tune. Ironically Error31000 is flawless. It delivers a spell binding idea without much of a breakdown and rolls along keeping the floor peppy.

Successes of their previous drum & bass anthems include ‘Flashlight’ which soon became one of the scene’s most sought after dubs championed by Randall, ‘She Just Wanna Dance’ which conveyed the powerful message of one of the many struggles womxn face when simply trying to enjoy themselves to the music they love, ultimately leading to a spoken word performance from Inja in the Huffington Post, and ‘Be My Cure’ which was originally released on Sick Music 2019 but still dishes out damage to this day. Bristolian don Nuke is next up on Audio Entropy, an exciting British imprint based out of Welwyn Garden City. The innovative label have been setting pace as of late with a wide variety of drum & bass-themed releases from a number of both upcoming and established names, including H20 DnB, eFly, Neuroscientist, Esoro, Bordome and Trial & Error, kicking up a flurry of hard-hitting sonics in their wake.

Nuke is next up, and boy has he brought some sauce with him. The EP, comprised of 6 full-frontal, minimally-edged 174 cuts, is an absolute corker, supplying everything we could want from a project of this nature. The lead track ‘Mist’, which we’ve had the pleasure of hosting today, is up first, strutting forth in a blaze of low, scything sorcery. It dips gleefully into a number of different, core elements of the DnB spectrum, but always reverts to that raw, stripped back aesthetic you can hear reverberating effortlessly from all corners of this EP.

Elsewhere on the EP, highlights include the highly-impressive, always-progressive nuances of ‘The Short Of It’, the brilliant, bonafide rolling tones of the standout ‘Hydra’ and the pulsating, culpable grittiness of wobble-fest ‘Eyes Of Xena’. All are linked by a vital string of developing sonics, but also willing enough to push out into their own unique zones; it’s a fantastic EP to listen to in full, and one we’ll definitely keep in our rotation.
