The Berghain resident talks about re-queering the goth scene, exploring a lighter side of his sound and preparing for marathon closing sets.

Hayden Payne, AKA Phase Fatale, grew up fully immersed in the world of music; his dad is a recording engineer and musician, as are many members of his family. After joining post-punk outfits like Dream Affair and consuming a diet of new wave and synth from parties like Wierd in New York, Payne eventually relocated to Berlin, where he saw possibilities emerge around ways of fusing guitar music with sounds for the dance floor. It was only shortly after relocating that he landed a residency at Berghain and began releasing his own productions as a techno artist, becoming known for darker-edged sets and productions that fuse industrial, EBM and techno.

In this episode of the RA Exchange, he talks to senior producer Chloe Lula about all of this and more, like "re-queering" the goth scene; exploring a lighter side of his sound with his Italo duo, Soft Crash; his label, BITE Records; and sustaining strong ties to dance floors in Kyiv and Tbilisi, two cities that he reflects as being refreshingly socially and politically motivated for queer artists living in the margins. The alchemy of techno is forged with a variety of tools. In darkened concrete crucibles, flowering tongues of light leap lapping across flesh slick with sweat, as bass hammers the shape of the sound into the minds throbbing within. In a city that both reveres and takes such institutions of arcane aurals as commonplace, what revelations may yet be gleaned on the dance floor?

The sonic world of Halv Drøm delve deep into this burning question. Weaving science and spirituality into well-established engines of industrial, EBM and post-punk, Saxon Jorgensen’s work seeks to break out of the confines of “dark” music (by this point an overused descriptor, particularly in these crumbling times) to shape something far more imperious and personal. Whereas techno is so often used as a sledgehammer, Jorgensen wields it like an ice-sculptor with a chainsaw.

Rooted in an appreciation of personal magick and political upheaval, accordingly a strong DIY aesthetic is Halv Drøm’s backbone. Field recordings, guitars churned into shrieking maelstroms, binaural frequencies that sidle beneath waves of polyrhythmic experimentation, and a willingness to go beyond comfortable dance patterns are all in play here. Modern electronics and ancient chakra tonal systems form a ritual of harsh healing; imperative in our time.

Night Train

Ontic, a project by Australian songwriter and producer Andrew Dun, combines elements from the machine driven post punk electronica of the 80s and 90s, bringing these into a contemporary context. Ontic blends heavy electronic beats with a brooding yet subtle lyricism that explores physical ambiguity and psychological uncertainty. Ontic's output puts the body first, where a deep, hook-laden electronic funk typically underpins musical journeys that are at once both urgent and oblique.

Ontic's first releases came in 2018, with a stretch of singles spanning dark synth pop (Citizen), atmospheric industrial techno (Captive), neo-body music (Sign) and epic electronica 'Subterranean'. Ontic's debut album, The Movement Of Light, followed in 2019. The eight track LP introduced several new tracks, including the widescreen electronica of 'Headline' and the shadowy urban synthpop of 'Siren Fields'.

The driving industrial funk of 'Night Train' followed in 2021.

2022 will see the release of Ontic's new single, 'Reflex'. The single is a glistening yet hypnotic exploration of post-wave electro pop, and is accompanied by the ominous industrial cyber-pop of b-side 'In The Moment'.
