Spain’s Cora Novoa makes her debut on Second State with a 4 track EP featuring a remix from Nur Jaber. 

DJ/Producer, label boss & creative director Cora Novoa will debut on Berlin’s Second State with ‘Rituals’ EP. The release contains 3 dynamic original tracks from the Spanish creative, with an additional rework from regular Berghain DJ Nur Jaber. 

Opening with the title track ‘Rituals’, Cora sets the pace of the EP with a pulsating kick and bass combo, uniform claps and a misting synth to give a dark atmosphere. A recurrent and frenzied vocal is introduced, throwing off all steadiness and sending the percussion into a frenzy. Deranged industrial elements and off kilter sonics whine and ring out as the track develops, adding to the darkness Novoa has initially created. Subsequent track ‘Old Anthems’ is forefronted by a bubbling electro riff and a repetitive, chopped up sample ringing out in tandem with percussive stabs. Glitchy drums and distortions are dotted throughout, adding an eccentricity to this trance-inducing track. 

‘I’m Gonna Kill You King Romano’ is the shortest cut on the EP, but packs just as much impact. The sound production mimics that of polyphonic choir music, with Cora using multiple samples and effects to achieve this. The voices are layered over gentle pads and modest twinkling keys to create an ethereal moment in this raucous EP. Nur Jaber’s rework brings with it a sharp, leaner kick and switch-up with the samples - now using a low pitched and muffled male voice. Trance-like synths are teased out but restrained. Nur’s interpretation adds a lightness to the original, playing with arrangements and creating a new melody of airy wavering keys and a distorted, washed-out rave sound.

Radio Slave announces Part 2 of Rekids Special Projects ‘Actualize’ compilation.

Rekids Special Projects, the no-nonsense techno-focussed sub-label of Radio Slave, aka Matt Edwards’ Rekids, launched in 2017 and has since released music from the likes of Mark Broom, Luke Hess, Jon Hester, and more. For the 50th release, Edwards readies ‘Actualize’, bringing acts from the wider Rekids universe into one slick collection, with the second part arriving this February alongside a DJ mix of the tracks. 

“I had no idea how big this project would become when I started planning the ‘Actualize’ compilation back in October. With 28 tracks, I decided to split the comp into 2 parts, and it also gave me and some of the other artists featured here a chance to finish their tracks. I’m super happy with ‘Actualize’, and it’s a great honour to have guest artists such as Slam and Ian Pooley’s Silvershower project on RSPX.” - Radio Slave

Detroit pioneer Robert Hood joins Radio Slave’s Rekids label with a fourteen track album entitled ‘Mirror Man’ this November.

A founding member of Underground Resistance alongside Mad Mike Banks and Jeff Mills, Robert Hood is one of techno’s originators and his decorated career spans three decades. The American artist and his M-Plant label laid down the blueprint for minimal techno and 1994’s ‘Minimal Nation’ on Axis was a definitive album that further cemented Hood’s reputation as one of the greats to emerge from the Motor City.

Since then, Hood has gone on to release on many of electronic music’s best labels like Tresor, Peacefrog, Music Man Records, Dekmantel and more. After a busy few years making music and touring as Floorplan alongside his daughter Lyric, Hood now joins Rekids with an album showcasing his innate knack for crafting paired back but intricate rhythms that deliver punch and soul.

Opening with the cinematic ‘Through A Looking Glass Darkly’, the album quickly flows into precise, powerful four four. There’s mesmerising cuts such as ‘Fear Not’ with its throbbing bass and spectral vocals, the twisted and off-key ‘Run Bobby, Run’, not to mention muscular tracks designed to light up dancefloors like the machine driven ‘Ignite A War’ or the robust and rumbling ‘The Cure’.
Hood also breaks things up with downtempo and mind bending interludes, including the tranquil yet spooky ‘Black Mirror’ and the beatless and murky ‘Freeze’. Each of these are aural feasts that demonstrate his vast musical pallet.

From start to finish ‘Mirror Man’ is an education in finesse from one of techno’s most heroic artists, landing on one of electronic music’s most important labels.
