When the rules say image is most important, they've pushed their art to the forefront instead. When the rules say you have to explain to everyone what the meaning of each song is, TBO has chosen to leave it up to your interpretation and let the art speak. That has never been more apparent than with their new release "KOON SH!T". You may or may not recognize the backing soundtrack of this song depending on which era you affiliate with, but you'll undoubtedly recognize TBO's fearlessness in efforts to push the art form forward. "KOON SH!T" is the lead song taken from a spur of the moment project called "80zBabiezToDa2Gz". This ExperiMix, as they call it, was recorded at the mysterious TBOHQ in one weekend in May. Raashan Ahmad was on a euro tour some weeks ago and during his stop in Berlin we were talking music over dinner. I told Raashan that we are about to release an album with Ta-ku (which has happened in the meantime, check out the "DOWHATYOULOVE" album) and he asked me whether I knew that he recorded a full album with him some time ago during his last australian tour. No, I didn't know that and getting my hand on the album turned out to be not too easy as it couldn't be located for quite a while. In the end Raashan found it on an old hard drive and I was a fan of the album instantly. It's raw hip hop in the truest sense. None of the songs are longer then 3 minutes, quite some are around the 2 minute mark. Nothing but dope beats and raps with some unreleased Ta-ku instrumentals sprinkled in between. 

In celebration of both artists releases on Jakarta Records this year we figured it would be nice to give it away for free digitally and even better we decided that pressing it on wax would be nice too. Only 250 copies, numbered, no repress, the first 80 copies on clear wax.

In 1993, years before anyone told ya’ to “get up off them goddamn diamonds”, South Jamaica, Queens, craziest Bal-Hed sons, ONYX, were already busy takin’ some of the Golden Era’s loot and running with it to new heights, stamping the term “hardcore” in its darkest terms upside hip hop’s head with their seminal, trailblazing platinum debut, Bacdafucup.

 

The iconic cover image of four bald, angry-lookin’ niggas, their legendary “MadFace” logo, a shoulder-strapped automatic and a menacing boot-tread took rap to a world that could “Slam” in an era where even looking at someone wrong at a rap show could get you gone. Fredro Starr, Sticky Fingaz, SonSee and the late brother Big DS didn’t break the rules: they scared them the fuck away.

 

Twenty years and several full-length underground classics later, there is still nothing so raw in live rap as getting tossed into the barrier by the smiling, sweating, maniacal fans swarming the pit, to find yourself face-to-face with the ever-Mad Faced, ever Bal-Heded ‘Dro and Sticky (and this summer, on the Rock the Bells tour, Sonsee).

 

Face to face with loud, abrasive greatness, you might just find yourself lucky enough to embrace a boot to the temple when Sticky stage-dives, or swimming with the sharks to make waves for the crowd surfers while you “Throw Ya Gunz”.

 

ONYX made boom bap gangsta, gave metal street cred, and exposed the kinship of hip hop and punk rock cultures to a wider global audience on the strength of their delivery and the look in their eye that said this was no gimmick, motherfucker – all under the guidance of their mentor and producer, the departed architect Jam Master Jay.

 

With the Snowgoons-produced Cuzo LP hot on the way and the custom-built hybrid project Black Rock in the aisles and their newly-minted international “100Mad” click growing stronger, 2013 sees ONYX bring it back-da-fuck up in your mad face. Watch out, ‘cuz they’re coming for head-blood.
