Odalie - Les Hybres

Two years after her self-titled EP, ODALIE, the creative outlet of French composer Sophie Griffon, returns with Derrière l'écran - another EP format that interacts with an elaborate audiovisual live show.
Together with cellist Paolo Rezze and visualist Alma Alta, 5 evocative audiovisual paintings have been created between electronica, ambient and modern classical music.

Attributes like « drill’n’bass » or « future jungle » appear when talking about Emptone ́s music, but with Odalie’s “Cycles” he takes us into his universe of intoxicated, dusty dry rhythms and powerful bass by reworking the song.

Cycles - Emptone (Odalie Remix)

With this remix I chose to get an emotional and romantic feeling out of the synths of the original Max cooper's track. I played with the harmonies to find a melancholic vibe and asked my cellist to play these beautiful pads to extend the chords.

I also wanted to show this profound introspective state that I love to experience sometimes and I wanted the big dynamics to picture what's happening in my head, profound bass for power and lights all around to pictures my thoughts flying.

I chose to put only one little sound of modular synth (with the Pads)and for the rest I wanted to play with the stems a lot : re-arrange them and try to find background sounds in the original track to put them in front.

Max Cooper - A model of reality - Odalie rework (Mesh Challenge)

This track is my call for hope. 

The lyrics were intentionally simplistic on purpose. Myself, Robin and Camille from Black Lilys wanted the message to sound candid and obvious. It's a journey for me to go back to what is essential, with humility and to try being connected to nature via my means of expressing myself musically whilst also connecting with others in the most simple and humble way I'm able to be. 

I wanted something instrumentally encompassing the ground & the sky, and everything in-between; to remember where we take place as humans. 

That’s why the bass is really gravelly and the drums have a very organic timbre. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the cello is always aerial, in an abstract sense I find them connecting to the stars and the sky. 

It was a lot of improvisation at first, with my synths, layering one on another at first and then with Black Lilys we wanted to cut everything; like a puzzle, we reassembled all the synths, and then sampled other synth parts to make a new arrangement. It’s also the first time I did a type of “pop” song arrangement along with a chorus. The challenge was great because there are a lot of pop songs I love and it can be so efficient to communicate messages lyrically through this format.

We Are Nature feat Black lilys

Battements means impact or movement of beats and the sound resulting from it; repeating collisions. It can be used for the wings flapping of a butterfly or a bird, the patter of rain at the window, or it can also be heartbeats. I wanted to express the series of shocks you’re receiving when in relation to others, the heartbeats trying to accommodate each other with difficulties; how you can be consumed in that if you don’t set boundaries but also the beauty  that sometimes presents itself from being burned in a relationship.
Layers of synthesizers and infinite delays accumulate until  they overflow at the end, creating an array of raw emotions, evoking the braziers of a burning forest; it’s like when you burn yourself by wanting to melt with another person.It also evokes a difficulty to accommodate to the world and other people, trying to cast in the mold, knowing that it gives you pain; from the beginning there is sadness and rage about being stuck.
Musically, the cello acts freely at first, surrounded by layers of drums complimenting each other; it’s  always improvised and when performed live we’ll never do it the same way,  it’s unpredictable, like our emotions. For this “battement” we wanted the cello to coalesce around the bass frequencies, whilst changing the range all the time throughout; never in the same register, imitating, with a classical music instrument, common patterns of synths movements : sometimes you don’t recognize the cello at all.
The aerial rings synths are made with my modular synthesizer that I played to make some “errors”. This exact sound is the result of improvisation, never the same in live.

Paolo had to be really precise in the cello playing at the end with the fast tempo towards the end (150 BPM). We wanted him to meet the arpeggiation of synths exactly in terms of rhythms; we almost abandoned this idea at one point because it was too fast and needed it to be reproducible many times, but in the end we did it. That track is also evoking a lot of the way we work together with Paolo as my cellist for 6 years. We want to experiment together with the cello sound, with new and sometimes difficult ideas when composing a track; sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, and that’s a beautiful metaphor for a relationship.

Battements

This is my participation to the little remix challenge of "Metropole" on Amon Tobin discord ! 

I made it in two days so there is a few things I could still tweak but that was the challenge for me with the deadline !

That's pretty dark for one of my track, I'm on the dark side of the moon right now, I did put a lot of rage I have right now in this ( to let it go ).

Concerning the instruments there is modular synth, prophet 6 and a lot of audio manipulation / delays and granular stuff.

Amon Tobin - Metropole (rework)

This track is about an emancipatory struggle, there’s been a lot of anger magnified within it, but also an anger to be free and let go of the ties that keep us from moving forward. The track title means ‘Inside storms’ in French. It was a cathartic means of expressing myself with frustration, as a means of relinquishing the control it can have on us. 

There is also pain, the kind of pain you don’t see, but can eat you from inside, a pain you try to let go of with strength and determination. I know that most of the time people can have a lot of difficulties expressing their suffering, by not sitting with it and being drowned in it because of that pain, and voicing it often people think it presents the worry of making you appear weak. 

However, I believe it can actually feel pretty good to surrender to pain, and that’s what I wanted to express in these synths crying in essence screaming in pain, it’s an exercise in letting go - that pain can embrace you with a warm feeling.  

The percussions are heavily treated with saturations, the synths are manipulations from my modular synthesizer with a lot of granular synthesis. The cello as been recorded with a

PuigTec EQP-1A in the studio which generates saturations to overdrive it and the bass is from my Prophet 6.

Some believe that cooperation is more valuable than competition. Whilst others can justify individualistic behaviours as a product of nature, the opposite can sometimes emerge as the truth. 

Nature presents a subtle balance between many entities
and many living worlds, connected in spite of themselves, and yet deeply interdependent. 

It is this notion that Sophie Griffon, aka Odalie, uses as a thematic launchpad for her ambitious new album Puissante Vulnérabilité (Powerful Vulnerability).

In a world that often labels vulnerability as a weakness, Odalie laments on the importance of embracing our reliance upon each
other as a crucial part of survival. In short, we need to collectively find the courage to show ourselves as imperfect and fragile
as a way of moving forward.

Puissante Vulnérabilité attempts to contribute to this discussion with an album full of contrasts and raw emotions, interspersed
with moments of quietude and a heavy dose of experimentation. 

Creating complex arrangements with a wide range of
instrumentation, Odalie crafts mosaics of sound that range from uplifting to melancholy, touching on a world of emotion in
between. Delicate drum patterns spiral beneath experimental strings, vast pads, and virtuosic vocals, as she explores the
contradictions of modern living, both personal and societal.
Harbouring a highly improvisational approach to her production, the album was made from a collaborative perspective, in part
garnered from years as an active member of activist communities. 

With synthesisers and a computer as her primary instrument,
Odalie’s songwriting is governed more by her inquisitive spirit than by the restrictions of formal musicality. As such, the
structures and arrangements throughout the album are free from restraint.

Puissante Vulnérabilité is an attempt at offering a different perspective; an encouraging project to inspire the pursuit of strength in that which may seem weak.

Between electronica, modern classical and ambient music, her tracks are a poetic invitation to meditate or to a merry solitude. 
Her debut album, Puissante Vulnérabilité which will be released on Max Cooper's Mesh imprint September 29, is full of contrasts and raw emotions, interspersed with moments of quietude and a heavy dose of experimentation. 

She encourages us to show our flaws, for it is through them that we weave our relationships with others and with Nature.

She is accompanied on stage and in the studio by the cellist Paolo Rezze.
