In this episode of OogeeCast, we provide a recap of the brilliant 3rd edition of the Afro-Latino festival in New York City. The annual festival is committed to affirm, educate, and celebrate Afrolatinidad.

And you're probably wondering why an Afro-latino festival needs to exist. As with any marginalized group, festivals and institutions are created in order to gather support for a cause or culture; the festival was a way to unite individuals from the diaspora, especially those with African roots from Latin America and the Caribbean; they're too often ignored and their blackness either overly suppressed or overly objectified.

The second night of the Afro-Latino Festival featured a special event; the screening of Afro-Latino TV: The Untaught Story. As its name implies, the documentary spreads knowledge of the history and culture of Afro- Latinos. On this night, OogeeWoogee was able to see part one of a seven part series. An Immigrant Story Behind the Poetry with Tiffany Kang

I'm never that guy that gets caught up in TV shows. I watched the first season of "The Walking Dead", liked it, and never bothered to begin the second season. I've never seen an episode of "The Game of Thrones", "Breaking Bad", or "South Park" (gasp!). But for some reason (an obvious reason, in hindsight) I found myself binge watching Aziz Ansari's Netflix series "Master of None".

The show (written, directed, and starred in by Ansari) covered subject matter that hit close to home. "Master of None" not only tackled dealing with love and communication in the age of social media, but he also wrote episodes focused on growing up with immigrant parents and realizing male privilege. Aziz did a good job of bringing up narratives and topics that are rarely talked about on sitcoms. It had myself discussing and dissecting these things in my own head but getting another person's opinion can always help shape your own. I called on my friend and peer Taizu.

Taizu is a rapper and just an all around smart dude who I enjoy engaging in conversation with. This podcast consists of us talking about our experience watching "Master of None", to the Syrian refugee conflict, to his parents wanting him to shave his beard because they're scared of what society will think of him, and everything in between.

Sofiya Ballin, staff writer for Philly.com, completed a well-received, interractive project called "Black History: What I Wish I Knew," a photography and personal essay series highlighting the African diaspora. She characterized the project as "An identity series that explores the importance of a comprehensive black history education."
