UNGRU VOL 2

This is an EP we have been eagerly awaiting to officially release.

The tracks, born out of live improvisation, represent our usual way of creating music. The fact that this particular work turned out so well in our opinion and has now reached an official release makes us incredibly happy.

Within half an hour of improvisation, several tracks emerged that have become significant landmarks in our live performances.

Raw and inspired—that's exactly how the upcoming short album, set to be released on 15th of Nov 2024, represents our shared, moment-driven creative process. The album is presented as a continuous flow, with smooth transitions between tracks, inviting listeners to sway along in a unified groove until the end:

"Hanemäng" – Based on a traditional singing game of the same name, reimagined with a sound worthy of a nocturnal dance club.
"Blade" – Inspired by the famous vampire rave scene from the movie Blade.
"Land of Bass" – With deep and powerful bass sounds, we invite listeners into a shared energy and dance world. Watch out that your speaker membranes survive 😈.
"Hanemäng outro" – The album concludes with a return to the original, tradition-inspired theme.
The album cover art was created by Mari:
"I aimed to design the cover in a way that reflects what I feel while listening to and performing the album's tracks: a long autumnal bird migration to the Milky Way (the geese are gone, frost has arrived!), OOPUS-style neon colors that always sparkle at our live shows and pair beautifully with the northern lights, and the introspective journey of each track represented by the silhouettes and shadows of birds—each one unique, yet together as one."

“The Battle of Põhjala'' is the first ever Estonian bagpipe techno track. It’s based on a dialogue between awesome sounding Estonian bagpipes and iconic Roland TB-03 analog synthesizer. You remember techno viking, yes? Now try to imagine him raving to bagpipes :D This is our track!

OOPUS musicians and the authors of the song "Tension Release" Mari Meentalo and Johannes Ahun are looking for the formula of good music that makes everyone dance with their own creations. They get inspiration from older Estonian folk music and electronic dance music.
The band has been operating since 2017, and 4 people from different backgrounds meet in it, who together create a characteristic and special OOPUS sound and feel: Mari Meentalo represents Estonian tradition in the band, Johannes Ahun represents electronic music, Aleksander Sprohgis represents light and visual art, and Raho Aadla represents dance art.
"Tension Release" is about finding balance in your inner world.

Sissejuhatus, meaning introduction in English,
opens the door to OOPUS’ upcoming album
Reivlender. The piece sets the tone for the
album’s world by merging intuition and
heritage into a single gesture. Its melody
appeared to Mari Meentalo in a dream, quiet
and fully formed, as if rising from a deeper
cultural memory that continues to shape the
group’s sound. Through Estonian bagpipes, jew’s
harp, vocals and analog synthesizer basslines,
the track creates a bridge between ancient
timbres and contemporary rhythm.

Sissejuhatus mirrors how OOPUS approaches
folktronica. Mari Meentalo’s studies in
heritage-based creative practices provide her
with a clear conceptual and practical
framework for navigating between traditional
material and contemporary expression.
Johannes Ahun’s sound-engineering
background shapes how these ideas unfold in
texture, space and rhythm.

OOPUS draws inspiration from Estonian
traditional music and their Finno-Ugric roots,
letting ancient rhythms and imagery surface
through contemporary electronic sound. In
Finno-Ugric cosmology the world begins with a
mystical bird whose egg becomes the Sun, the
Moon and the Earth. The Milky Way, known as the
Bird’s Way in Estonian, is the path along which
birds travel between realms. These myths form
a subtle backdrop for OOPUS as symbols that
continue to shape how their music imagines
origins, movement and transformation.

OOPUS is folk on acid!

Its three members mix Estonian traditional music with analog synths and make their custom light installations pulsate as one with music.

OOPUS loves traditional and electronic dance music. They combine Estonian bagpipes and runo songs with classic acid synths TR-09 and TB-03 that will take you from techno to acid, from 120bpm to 150bpm and beyond.

Their new album "Folk On Acid" will be released in 2022!

OOPUS is Mari Meentalo (Estonian bagpipes, vocals and looper), Johannes Ahun (analog synthesizers, live sound engineer), Aleksander Sprohgis (lights and visuals, installations).
