As they approach each other, their shapes become distorted and their orbits change as they feel the pull of each other's gravity. The stars and gas within each galaxy are pulled and stretched, and may even be sent hurtling towards the other. Finally, they collide head-on in a spectacular display of light and energy, creating new stars and celestial objects.
