The Whiteadder Tapes is the culmination of a sonic archaeology project developed in response to new mapping and excavational research led by AOC Archaeology in the Whiteadder Water Valley, Scottish borders for the Whiteadder: Heart of the Lammermuirs community project 2019-2020 www.whiteadder.aocarchaeology.com 

Composed solely from field recordings, instrument sound and the human voice, the record is an exploration of acoustic ecology and the territories between environmental, human and technological presences in the context of local history and folk narrative. 

The album re-works, fragments and builds upon on a number of related Scottish + Irish folk laments as a basis for exploring dynamics of the voice, placing them within improvisational terrains of traditional instrument drones, environmental sounds, stray electromagnetic signals, infrasonic listening.

The Whiteadder Tapes (partial album)

'Edinburgh phonemes i_ ¨  ⨕}  ¤ ± .aif’ draws together numerous field, instrument and voice recordings gleaned over the last year (2021-22) around Edinburgh’s shifting zones of urban and rural space. Considering themes of patterning, gesture, drift and variation, OOR_Scintilla have worked with these recordings primarily for their harmonic qualities, often finding and manipulating sounds that are on the edges of recognition or tactility.

The work was created in collaboration with Josh Corkill, whose samplings of recordings made by OOR_Scintilla weave in and out of the tracks as contemporary interpretations of folkloric/paganistic rituals and songs.

Celebrating fifty years since the filming of the cult folk horror film The Wicker Man (1973)in Scotland, the FOIK FLAW exhibition project celebrated how ancient and reimagined folkloric artefacts, rituals, processions and soundscapes as introduced in The Wicker Man and its accompanying soundtrack can enable a community a cultural + social identity.

OOR_Scintilla (Louisa Love and Clive McLachlan Powell) are an Edinburgh-based artist duo working experimentally in sound, music, performance and sculptural production. 

Interested in the material poetics of sound, voice and place, they produce environmentally-responsive audio works exploring hybrid and enigmatic territories. They work directly with the physicality of environments, instruments, objects, electronics, bodies and vocal performance with reference to ancient folk origins, to 'give voice' to overlooked qualities and narratives that resonate specificities of place. 

'OOR' is a sonorous acronym akin to the sound of resonating clay, embodying what the duo define as a practice of 'object oriented resonance'.
