Assorted Techno Mixes

Take a trip into the murky waters between industrial sounds and techno with Repitch Recordings and Violet Poison co-founder Shapednoise. 

With a new wave of emerging noise producers sweeping through the fields of harder-edged techno, Shapednoise is perhaps one of the better known acts to proliferate from a busy industrial movement. This year it’s been difficult not to know about the Berlin-based Italian known as Shapednoise, who in the past twelve months alone has been involved in three albums; two as Shapednoise and another as Violetshaped.

Unlike Samuel Kerridge, who virtually became synonymous with a hybrid form of industrial techno overnight, Shapednoise hasn’t had the instant exposure an artist might receive when releasing music on labels like Downwards and Horizontal Ground. Working his way from releasing digital EPs on Pfirter’s MindTrip Music in 2010, the shadowy Italian has since established his own techno imprint Repitch Recordings with compatriots Ascion and D.Carbone, been commissioned to remix Developer on Semantica, while honing his noisy craft in the studio to produce albums for Vatican Shadow’s Hospital Productions and the forthcoming When Human Voices Wake Us on Opal Tapes.

Merging his productions and name with fellow Italian producer Violet Poison (who has also just released an album on Hospital Productions this year), Shapednoise becomes Violetshaped. The collaborative endeavour has resulted in the release of a distinctive self-titled debut album on their Violet Poison imprint this year, intriguingly preceded by a remix EP featuring an esteemed cast of producers in Roly Porter of Vex’d, Vatican Shadow and Kangding Ray. Looking further afield for The Remixes Part 2, the label has managed to wrangle an extremely rare remix from Keith Fullerton Whitman - only his fourth from a career that spans longer than a decade - while also securing others from Raster-Noton and Semantica act Grischa Lichtenberger, and JK Flesh, a fledging experimental pursuit of former Napalm Death guitarist Justin K Broadrick.

Shapednoise's mix for Juno Plus is an accurate reflection of the sonic approach his own music takes, featuring abrasive sounds from Demdike Stare, Mordant Music, Russell Haswell and more across its 55 minute duration. In addition, Shapednoise was kind enough to field some questions we sent via email, discussing how he came to work with Violet Poison and Dominick Fernow, what to expect from Repitch Recordings and more. Industrial Techno Mix #001 Free D/L

CATACOMB

Catacomb is Toronto based DJ, event organizer and journalist. He has long been part of the electronic music culture in his city for over a decade, exploring different niches within the scene as a fan. He got his start as a resident DJ and event organizer in early 2011, working with Zero-Percent. Together they’ve succeeded in bringing international talent to the city such as Sasha Carassi, Erphun and Subfractal (Aka Measure Divide). 

Sensing a general lack of knowledge regarding techno in his city and the local talent to play it, he formed Opaque Shift (OS) in late 2012. OS is a music collective which has been responsible for putting new artists into the scene and fostering their career moving forward, artists include: Paulina G, Stephanie Jax, Toca, and Vyxn. The group also writes news, which has included write-ups for artists such as Perc, Mick Finesse and Subfractal (AKA Measure Divide). 


PAULINA G

Paulina G comes from the suburbs outside Toronto and finds her passion rooted in the raw side of techno. Her biggest influences include Luis Flores, Brian Sanhaji, and Truncate to name a few. Paulina G collaborated with Catacomb in late 2012 and joined his collective Opaque Shift to disseminate the techno scene throughout Toronto culture. She’s played regular events inside the Guvernment, Li’ly Lounge, and at several events hosted by Zero Percent. Catacomb and Paulina G worked together in the recording of this podcast.

Shadowy Avian duo SHXCXCHCXSH toast their upcoming debut LP with a simply amazing mix.

The Avian label has firmly established itself as a potent force in contemporary techno since it was founded by Shifted and Ventress in late 2011 with a singular sonic and visual aesthetic, ensuring a palpable sense of excitement and expectation attached to whichever artist from the small roster of Avian artists stepped forward to deliver the label's first full length album. That the honour has been handed to SHXCXCHCXSH with the soon to drop STRGTHS LP adds a further element of intrigue thanks to the lack of discernible information regarding the allegedly Swedish pair.

The forthcoming album is a logical progression from the material SHXCXCHCXSH have released thus far on Avian, Semantica and Subsist, delving further into the realm of hollowed-out techno across seven cuts brandishing typically scrambled track titles. Having agreed to contribute a mix, SHXCXCHCXSH turned in a thunderous hour long selection that contains moments of sheer sonic devastation (around the 40 minute mark in particular) yet also fits in specially edited post punk curios, demonic chanting and unreleased material, some of which is on the upcoming album.

The mix has been a near constant on the Juno Plus office stereo since we received it; however, attempts to engage SHXCXCHCXSH in further dialogue were met with short shrift with the following cryptic message their sole response:
