During peak pandemic days in 2020, there was a sizeable exodus from Australia's locked down major cities towards the free open and creative promised lands of Byron Bay. Among the species trekking North was a curious one that no-one had ever seen before.   

Then one late Saturday night in the hinterlands of tha Bay, this unique prowess was spotted occasionally popping up at house parties in the area. Fortune had it that one of our Reckless Republic A&R scouts spotted this nocturnal life form setting up an impressive habitat for its performance. Including a Moog sub37, an Elektron machine drum, a Prophet 6 synthesiser, a Roland TR8S, an Akai APC40, an electric guitar and last but not least a saxophone. As we watched on with amazement anticipating seeing a group of these rare creatures, it soon became clear that only one of them was to appear, it was a one-of-a-kind 24 y/o male, his name, Quackers.    

Like the Cosmic Dingo itself (title of track 3), since those fateful days in Byron Shire, Quackers has been seen snacking on a good dose of groovy house  sounds, occasionally whirling into techno and beyond; raw, groovy, dreamy, swampy, glitchy with overlays of organic instrumentation, this EP has it all. 

A few months later, a visit to the Reckless Republic HQ in Paddington, Sydney to perform his jaw-dropping live show for the Burning Man MultiVerse worldwide stream followed by some intense sessions in 'the Planettarium' studio meant that finally we could expose this rare breed of talent to the world.

When he's not writing his PhD thesis, working on the frontlines of the global health crisis, teaching at one of Australia's top universities, scaling epic mountain peaks or rocking mainstage crowds at the country's best festivals, you'll find this renaissance man toiling away in his Brisbane studio crafting some of the finest melodic techno, progressive house and electronica to emerge from Down Under this decade.

Beginning its creation before the world shutdown and completed as it once again began opening its doors, Perspective is the end result of three years of production output during the most turbulent period of history in human memory. Effortlessly moving from driving, riff-driven dancefloor stormers to deep, hypnotic melodics, funky progressive and lush, atmospheric ambient with stunning live cello from classical and electronic star Wilma, this 12-track masterpiece is the perfect example of the full stylistic depth of the Aussie innovator and why we believe he is the future of Open Records.

In a time when social media, singles and streaming rule, an album might seem like a relic of physical media or when listeners had longer attention spans. But with its unique and cohesive sound yet brilliant diversity that draws the listener in deeper with every listen, Perspective is captivating from start to finish and worthy of the weight of this classic concept. In our first discussions with Will about releasing a full-length body of work, we told him if you're going to do a melodic techno and house album in a sound at its absolute global peak, you've gotta do it properly. After two successful free downloads on deep stories, we are happy to present the talented producer Shahin on Deep Stories Records. His EP ‘5 Years’ gives a diverse sound that lets you dream and makes you want to dance. The first track is ‘Everest’ and shows the direction of the EP - upwards. The bassline frames the melody und guides us up the first meter, until we break through the clouds with ‘Through Clouds and Dust’ and feel the sun on our skin. This track, with its quiet sound will make you stop for a while and enjoy the moment. After a short moment of quiet, the intensive claps and the sawtooth wave will guide you to the climax. The more we climb, the more our heartbeat accelerates until pure energy shoots through our body and we see a mysterious creature on the top of the hill. Those energetic feelings are picked up by the track ‘The Caveman’ and the driving bassline forms the end of this brilliant EP.

Open Records is a techno, house and electronica imprint based out of the sunny state of Queensland, Australia. Founded in the lush tropical paradise of Cairns in 2007 and now managed out of the bustling metropolis of Brisbane, Open has grown into a respected and prolific label with more than 70 releases from artists in all corners of the globe.

The Open sound is just that. Over the years we have released everything from deep, organic, progressive and tech house, to staunch minimal, hypnotic tribal, driving techno and abstract electronica. What has remained constant is our desire to represent the intelligent, groovy, dancefloor-oriented sound of the Australian festival and party culture, with a little help from our friends around the world, too.
