Breaking Inertia is the product of months of self-study and reinvention for Calgary-based artist OpenEnd. The EP, which was written in intervals over the past two years, invites the listener on a journey through polyrhythmic and drifting techno with drum & bass through-lines. The artist draws inspiration from communities across Western Canada’s underground electronic music circuit and his own experiments with sonic techniques such as resampling, layering and automation. Restrictions birth new musical understandings as he employs drum machines while patching unique sounds through the Virus TI.

The title track creates a forested, lush environment using synthetic and organic percussive elements suited for late night raves and early sunrises alike. Respiration comes next, featuring a musicality of vocal sampling that fits well with an artist finding his breath and voice again after a period of grounding and rebuilding. String of Pearls rounds out the three-track release with its deliberate sound design and cross-genre dynamism.

Hey everyone. RF is back after an extended break with a new feature. This is a fresh version of the "Case File" feature that was operated previously, its a Different name, but same vibe!
First up we welcome Bristol based producer Uneven, who we have been big fans of for many years. We first became aware of him when he was making music predominantly with long time collaborator Jaskin many years ago and they went to be featured on the Case File series (still available to listen to FYI). In more recent times Uneven hes been making more solo music and also collaborating with other artists as well as still making music with Jaskin and is sitting on a STACK of wicked music which needs to be heard. Truthfully it was Uneven that sparked me to starting up a new feature, as when he would send me fresh music i would always be taken back at how good it was and am happy i can now let others hear it too!

OpenEnd is the hybridized output of multidisciplinary artist Reece Anderson (he/him). This producer, DJ, visual artist, and curator has formed his niche through a decade of contributions to the local and regional scene around his home base of Calgary, Canada (Treaty 7 Territory). 

His sonic palette has steadily expanded through exposure to new sounds and reflection inward, pulling inspiration from both sides of the Atlantic. Throughout his productions and DJ sets, he deftly fuses themes of techno, bass, breaks, footwork and contemporary jungle. With these materials, he creates hypnotic atmospheres resting somewhere in the liminal space between organic and synthetic percussion. His solo and collaborative releases have garnered support from Om Unit, J:Kenzo, Sun People, The Librarian, Anna Morgan, and Jaskin & Uneven. As a DJ, his skilful cuts and layered blends form unexpected explorations which have earned him performances at notable events such as Bass Coast, Shambhala, Sled Island, AEMCON and more. Outside of his audio and visual creations, Reece has a deep love for nurturing the underground community. He is the co-founder of the Radiate event series and co-host of The Lighthouse on CJSW 90.9 FM every Thursday from 22:00-23:00 MT.
