One hour of high speed bass insanity, embracing both new forms of hard dance music and a tribute to my early days in Berlin, where a wild mixture of breakcore, speedcore and gabber ruled the dancefloor. 

Originally premiered on @balamii as part of @mixtress monthly "Hardcore Amen" show, inspired by a review of my closing set at Lunchmeat Festival.

Opium Hum - Peasant Music Mix

As you might remember the last episode of my Hyper Real Radio show on Fritz was dedicated to the young and emerging talent the city has to offer, so I decided to do a reprise of sorts - many of the tracks that were sent in still haven't been released, but all of them are still fantastic, so I put them into a set. 

This mix is showcasing what I call "The New Berlin", throwing a light on all the experimental and left field sounds that populate this city's dance-floors, but are often drowned out by the thundering staccato of four to the floor kick drums.

Opium Hum - The New Berlin (NTS Radio, 06.11.21)

Earlier today I found the login details to an old ftp server of mine that contained something that I thought had been long lost - a mixtape that I recorded around 2010 for someone I was madly in love with. unfortunately it didn't work out between the two of us and I had my heart broken.

As you can imagine its probably one of my most intimate mixes. I don't have the tracklist anymore, but I know there's music by Alva Noto, Ras G, Blue Daisy, Castanets, gultskra artikler, Boduf Songs, múm, Little Dragon, Dälek, Current 93, Ben Frost, Coil, Floex and some tracks I currently can't identify.

I don't have the best memories of that time, but its an important document nonetheless.

Culling Songs. A lost mixtape for a lost lover (2010).

We're live with a new podcast series in which I'll be presenting DJs and artists that I find inspiring, exciting or who I think deserve a platform they don't have (yet).

Kicking off things with one of my favorite producers of all times and a true underground hero - Venezuelan electro kingpin @daggatrx. Even though he stepped up into the limelight very recently, his debut EP came out just three years ago via Jensen Interceptor's International Chrome label, he already established himself as one of the genre's most versatile producers, seamlessly fusing genres like Electro, Raptor House, Funk Carioca, Breaks, and Techno. Currently he's producing at hyper speed, releasing a flurry of tracks, edits, remixes and collaborations, while at the same time touring relentlessly. 

This b2b was spontaneously recorded in a basement mid-July in Berlin that also happens to be @elmanao's studio - another artist you should follow. No tracklist, comment for track IDs!

Hyper Real Radio 001: Opium Hum b2b Dagga

The second Hyper Real podcast of the year comes by Ukrainian DJ, producer and educator @axtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxt

Temporarily based in Prague, she is a resident at Prague’s Bike Jesus club and a co-founder of Motsion, an Ukrainian multidisciplinary collective focusing on audio and visual performances. 

Her set at the November edition of Hyper Real at Fuchs2 with Neffa-T & Flowdan was amongst the best sets I've heard in a club all year - the selection, flow and technical finesse was absolutely inspiring as is the mix she provided. Exciting, futuristic and bass-heavy dance music for heads.

Coming onto the global scene as one half of legendary duo X&G over a decade ago, Salt Lake City based Gaszia has established himself as one of the most exciting producers in the US-American underground music community. Hyper Real Radio 003: Gaszia

Hailing from Durban, South Africa, the trio Omagoqa consisting of Andile Mazibuko (Ma_A), Franco Makhathini (KB) and Njabulo Sibiya (Chase), are the vanguard of a new generation of artists ushering in a new wave of Gqom.

Calling their take on Gqom ‘uThayela’ & ‘Is’qinsi’,  it's a rougher sound with a harder bassline that it is made for clubs. ‘uThayela’ translates literally to “corrugated iron” which you find being used as roofing material on most South African homes), while ‘Is’qinsi’ is described as an infusion between ‘uThayela’ and the electronic sounds generally associated with the influences they incorporate from electronic music genres from outside of South Africa. 

Having been together for over 10 years, the trio have worked alongside some of SA's biggest artists, including a recent run of collaborations with titans such as DBN Gogo, DJ Lag & Dee Traits, but also collaborations with UK legend Scratcha DVA, showing that ten years into their career they barely just begun.

Hyper Real Radio 004: Omagoqa

rbf.linh is the solo project of Linh Luu, a Rotterdam-based artist, live performer, and producer.  Known also as one half of Animistic Beliefs, Linh channels her experiences as a queer, Vietnamese-Chinese person growing up in the West into dark, unpolished dance music that serves as a bold protest against Asian binary stereotypes.

Her hi-octane mix for the fifth installment of Hyper Real Radio is a peak-time, eclectic, and ecstatic exploration of the South-East Asian hard dance scene and the high-BPM frontiers of leftfield rave culture. It seamlessly blends hard-hitting Guaracha, hyper-charged Jersey club, trance-infused Breakcore, peak time post-Chaabi and even Vietnamese children's songs.

Hyper Real Radio 005: rbf.linh (Animistic Beliefs)

Hailing from the outskirts of the Brazilian capitol Brasília, Sykors represents a new, radical wave of the countries vast underground. His productions explore as much the distorted dystopia of Bruxaria, a relatively new sub genre of Brazilian Funk, as they re-imagine Techno and even Psytrance, often pushing the sound beyond the 160 BPM, operating at a bleeding ears volume level. Filled to the brim with his own tracks, his mix maps out the current state of the Brazilian underground music community, weaving together the music of lesser known collaborators and Brazilian contemporaries and connecting it with the work of other like-minded producers who work at the edgy, abrasive, and addictive intersection of techno, bass, dancehall, electro, and baile funk.

First Opium Hum set in 2024 - recorded for Arte Concert

Softmatter is a Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist, music producer, vocalist, and DJ exploring mutant, discordant electronics, alongside bouncing, stony drums and pitch-shifted vocals that travel between steepled choral motifs. She has released on renowned labels such as Halocline Trance, Infinite Machine and Berlin-based Soulfeeder. 


Her mix is ​​both a dark and melancholic approach to the thoughtful moments on the dance floor, situating the listener somewhere between dark ambient, industrial and the hazy afterglow of the vaporwave era, while at the same time giving us a glimpse into her hyper-futuristic vision of club music, enriched with elements of deconstructed club, post club and neo-trance.

Hyper Real Radio 007: Softmatter

Excited to welcome one of my favourite producers to the Hyper Real Radio family for the 8th instalment of the Hyper Real Radio mix series, Melbourne's bass-electro supervillain Hedchef!

Known for his razor-sharp, off-kilter club constructions that blend genres across the full range of the techno and rave continuum, his signature sound of futuristic broken-beat patterns and immaculate sound-design scored him releases on acclaimed labels including International Chrome, Childsplay and Scuffed Recordings. This is just the beginning however - with hours of unreleased material under his belt his journey has just begun and we can expect him to become one of underground music greatest (supervillains).

His contribution to the Hyper Real mix series is a deep dive into his own productions with plenty of unreleased and new material as much as it is a cross-section into his own influences and the current state of the cutting edge of bass-heavy club music.

Oh me, oh my - things are about to get serious, because we have a massive new Hyper Real Radio mix for you by one of our absolute favourite producers - @mruffing! 

The Berlin-based producer, DJ and Infinite Drift label boss has developed his own musical vocabulary in his music over the years, which is consistent but also constantly in motion. Anchored somewhere between IDM, Detroit Electro, Drill, hypnotic Trance and futuristic Y2K aesthetics, Mathis' music not only has drive on the dance floor, but also an element of hope and utopia - especially in times of hard techno hammering away, he gives us a refreshing reminder that the club is a positivist space for big gestures and big feelings.

His mix is equally bold and daring - a journey through complex polyrhythms to UKG gun finger energy to half-time DnB, juke, modern jungle and a trippy, emotive finale.

Opium Hum @ Reprezent Radio London (November 2024)

This is a live recording from a set I played for Kutmah's party at Berlin's legendary Ohm club. Anyone who knows me knows how much respect I hold for Kutmah, in my opinion he's one of the best DJs out there - his technical skills, his eclectic selection, his unique ability to make things work sonically and rhythmically that no other DJ could. For the set I decided to go back to the Opium Hum roots - originally the project was created as a spin-off to channel a darker, industrial-leaning side of my personal taste, which a lot of people still associate with the name. Its not that my taste has changed over the years, its just that I enjoy playing different music these days than I did back then, but the dissonance and darkness of post-industrial is still a red thread throughout everything I do. 

This set is a  reconciliation of sorts - an exercise in tonality, tension and sonic structures, and a celebration of transformation and continuity in my own DJing practice and artistic self.

Recorded a new mix for the incredible @ravlsncld -  a labyrinthine expedition traversing IDM topographies into psychedelic underworlds, grinding technoid convulsions, and shroomy, percussive frameworks before descending into abyssal, stripped-back drum & bass terrain at the lowest depths of the frequency spectrum.

Found an old hard drive with one of the oldest sets I remember to have ever recorded, March 2008, I believe it was for a radio station in St. Petersburg. I don't have a track list, but its a pretty solid selection of IDM, Dubstep, weird minimal Techno and bass-heavy 4x4 with tunes by Oni Ayhun, Untold, Burial, Squarepusher, DQ-1, Modeselektor, Murcof, Various Production, Appleblim & Peverlist, many of which I'd still play today. The photo in the artwork isn't from 2008 (I do have photos from that time, but I don't want to embarrass myself), but from a gig in 2010 taken at one of the many short-lived warehouse venues that existed in Ziegrastraße at that time.

Boiler Room took over Megapolis FM in Moscow on a cold Wednesday night in February for four hours. I got to play two set, one of which was a straight up jungle / juke / dnb set, most of it brand-new or release in the last year or so.

Dreams of Neon, Berlin's premier night for electro and space disco, invited me to play a set on their intergalactic.fm take-over. I don't get to play electro very often at the moment, so I coudn't resist of course!

Sound quality is unfortunately not the best + there was literally no monitoring and I only realized halfway through the set, that the A&H mixer was broken, but I'm happy with the result nonetheless.

One of my guests couldn't make it into the HYPER REAL RADIO studio, so I stepped behind the decks spontaneously and finally got to play a small selection of the tunes I gathered over the last few weeks doing the show (with one tune that sneaked in from 2019).

The mix is heavily influenced by the Timedance / Hessle Audio continuum, showcasing the status quo of the cutting edge intersection of Bass Music and Techno, scratching on the surface of IDM, Hard Drum and more complex polyrhythms in the range of 115 to 140 BPM. This means, in a nutshell, that it's BANGING 👌🏻

Opium Hum - The State of BASS Mix (Hyper Real Radio, 26.07.20)

For the three years I had a weekly radio show on Fritz, a public broadcast radio station in Berlin, providing a platform for emerging young talent and leftfield sounds from the global electronic music underground. 

The final episode will be broadcast January 29th. On January 21st I played my last on air DJ set, throwing together a bunch of tracks I enjoyed in the last few weeks, and just going at it. The result is a pretty wild ride going from 100 BPM mutant dembow to 160 BPM footwork and many styles in-between. 

There's one or two questionable transitions in the second half, mainly because the stations broadcast computer collapsed and I had to reboot that and continue the mix, but else I hope you'll enjoy!
