MINDFRAME 011: ADJ + CYBEREIGN [LIVE]

2022 has unarguably been a great year for Electro both with overall visibility for the genre as well as with the sheer number of quality releases being put out over the course of the year. This was also a year in which I took a break from my show and handed DJing responsibilities over to DJ friends from around the world. Couldn't be happier with how the year turned out for the show. I feel like It was a busy year both production-wise and promotion-wise for @DVSNME and @DarkScienceElectro respectively, however, I found some time to put together a mix of my favorite 22 tracks from 2022. For the 532nd episode of @DarkScienceElectro we check out a live performance recording of @cyphon14 & @obzerv

All tracks written and performed live by Cyphon and Obzerv using two Elektron Digitakts, one Elektron Digitone and a MAM MB33 running through an old Boss delay box. The set is comprised entirely of unreleased and original music.

Cyphon and Obzerv are a pair of 21 and 22-year-old producers from London, who have collaborated since high school. Having experimented with a few different genres – after discovering Electro they found the sound they wanted to specialize in crafting. Through their music they express their experience of growing up in the Age of the Internet, taking inspiration from science fiction stories and global current affairs alike. 

Over the past year they have broadcast live worldwide on Threads Radio and taken their act to club dance-floors, where they have supported Radioactive Man and Afrodeutsche. Cyphon recently released his debut single ‘Red Zone’ on audiovisual label Patchbay Records, and a debut back-to-back EP from the pair is forthcoming on independent vinyl imprint Gunfinger Food. Coming next on Cultivated Electronics Ltd (CE’s limited vinyl offshoot) is a V/A EP entitled ‘Onderwereld’ which takes its name from a former atomic bunker based in The Hague (Netherlands) that housed music studios, offices and the Intergalactic FM station, Onderwereld Radio. The building had to be vacated last year, but the amalgamation of some of those artists and their creative resources lives on. Together, they encapsulate the new underground sound of The Hague.

Opening the A-side is a track by Crave Festival organiser, Cosmox who delivers tough staccato Electro-funk on ‘Electrostress’, before 543ff (a regular player on the Dutch Electro scene who’s released on ÆX and has a forthcoming album on Diffuse Reality) brings stripped-back beats and layers of melody on ‘Easy’.

Keeping the Onderwereld collaborative ethos alive, 543ff joins forces with Star-kid (Bunker Records) and Gamma Intel (Brokntoys / Pinkman) on the B-side, for ‘Three City Firm’. Their original version is dark and bristling, while 543ff’s remix takes the track on a galactic ride.

Named 'Phanuel' EP, this various artists compilation is the fifth in the series in aid of the project, that seeks to help those in mental ill-health through engagement in the arts; they have been doing this vital work for over 20 years.

We have the first peek at PRZ's contribution 'Marathon'. He pairs classic EBM-style percussion with a notably skipping melody and guitar riffs for some added drama.
