In this episode I chat to Dr Karla Evans, a cognitive psychologist at the University of York investigating the mechanisms behind how humans get the “gist” of complex images, and how this can be applied to medical diagnostics. Her work has been influential in her field, having been cited over 3800 times. Over the course of this conversation we cover what ‘gist perception’ is in terms of Karla’s research, the AI systems she is training, the success of this research, the limitations and wider impacts of AI technology.
