Volatile Cycle, a name that is becoming firmly cemented into the upper echelons of cutting edge drum and bass is taking the scene by storm with their take on the darker end of the drum and bass spectrum. Consisting of 2 members, Dan Lawrence and James Chick, they began experimenting individually with genres such as garage and glitch hop and eventually found their niche in drum and bass. Building up their rep with a slew of releases on a number of reputable drum and bass outputs, they have worked 
their way up through the ranks to finally drop their debut LP on the seminal and beloved label Renegade Hardware. The Reaktiv LP is a masterclass in drum and music, showcasing their highly refined technical ability, yet still retaining the classic style reminiscent of the early Hardware days. Opening track ‘Wrench’ sets the tone, cutting through with razor sharp precision, whilst ‘Reckless’ and ‘Obey’ dominate the dancefloor with pulsating sub frequencies and rattling percussions. Newcomer to the scene Yen joins forces to unleash sinister undertones with ‘Forgotten Future’, whilst Russian neurofunk whizz Cod3x teams up with the duo to kill the dance with ‘Bounce. Nuklear MC puts his lyrical stamp on the track ‘Status’, a stripped back roller designed to cause maximum dancefloor damage. The Reaktiv LP is a huge milestone for Volatile Cycle. Showcasing their production chops, yet demonstrating an impressive degree of

In December 2013 Addictive Behaviour launched themselves in to the vast expanse of the underground D&B scene with a various artist album consisting of some formidable talent. Minor Rain was one of those artists, and now more than 2 years on from that pivotal moment Minor Rain fires up the Addictive engines once more for his third outing on the fast growing label. 

Hyrda opens with a sharp snare and stirring build up before a quick break . . . Then out of the depths looms a thick and thudding kick drum announcing a rise to a drop that you will feel the g-force of instantly. A heavily processed and filtered pumping bass rises up and down continually through this tune like the crest of a wave before crashing into an absurd break of fragmented drums. This one is not for the faint-hearted and once again showcases a colossal amount of creativity and dedication in Minor Rain, who is truly pushing the boundaries of modern music.

Australian audio architect Royalston has returned to Med School for his third album ‘Popular Mechanics’. Constantly pushing sonic barriers, this LP sees experimental drum & bass and electronica in its most exciting form. A 14-track delectation boasts cutting edge technical prowess balanced with a rich bouquet of musical grace. This combination of Royalston’s engineering expertise and musical pedigree renders an all-encompassing fusion of everything that makes drum & bass great.

'We Were Told’ ft ‘Amy Kisnorb’ is your staple drum & bass roller, in overdrive. It’s a twofold bass attack featuring wobbles and growls balanced with Amy’s angelic vocals. This track will be causing carnage in clubs and warehouses across the land with it’s constant evolution and high energy throughout.

Title track ‘Popular Mechanics’ is everything we love about Royalston. A trio of transformation; beginning gently with an uplifting melody which morphs into deeper techier terrain then reaching its climax with a finale of mind warping bass crunches.

Taking things back, Royalston explores a more traditional landscape in the form of ‘Strobes’. With customarily blissful vocals, this track is vintage Med School. Perfectly soulful, flawless and refined, it’s as smooth as butter. A genuinely marvelous specimen of pure splendor and elegance that remains accessible to all musical tribes.

It’s no surprise to anyone who heard “The Touch” last year that Mortem has swiftly become one of drum and bass’ most wanted new stars. His fresh take on slick, weighty bass and scatty, flickering snares makes a good swathe of the deep, brooding DnB community back up against the wall.
This time, releasing “Revolta” on Demand, Mortem seems to be doing his own mini tour of the most highly-regarded labels in Europe, and he doesn’t disappoint. “Revolta” is a mercenary tune, rolling out smooth over scattered breaks, lashing out then reigning back, never letting its guard down.

Both tracks have seen support from Alix Perez, Phobia, Jubei, June Miller, Nymfo, BTK, Doc Scott and master of the dark arts himself, Skeptical. If you’re looking for your next fix of unfolding darkness at 170 bpm, you just found it.

OPTIV is a name firmly embedded in both the forefront and deep memory of any true fan of drum & bass. He emerged into the scene with the seminal Cause4Concern sound, which made an enduring mark that influenced many of today’s great artists, including Noisia, and helped to mould the tech aesthetic that we –know today. The Optiv moniker erupted into existence a few years after the establishment of Cause4Concern, with the founding of his own label Red Light Records in 2002, an imprint that continues to be influential in both launching the careers of promising artists such as Inward, Hanzo & Randie, Impak as well as putting out high quality audio from established artists such as Tobax, Telekinesis, The Upbeats and Black Sun Empire.
