Detroit means a lot to the techno world. At a point in time, it launched an entirely new genre. As a place, it birthed an entirely new cultural phenomenon. But as a genre, it has a unique and highly discernable sound that has touched every corner of the planet, giving an immeasurable amount of producers inspiration to their creativity and a formula they’ve looked to emulate. Mix five for “The Arsonist & The Architect” spins the concept on its head slightly - this entire mix is dedicated to the place I grew up in and that helped me cut my teeth as a DJ. I’ve constructed the session without a single Detroit artist - only those that are from abroad and were inspired by the sound this city gave to the world. “Influence” is about what Detroit did to techno on a global scale.

I was invited by the lads behind the monument podcast serie to contribute an episode. Recording it was somehow a mission in itself, but It happened in time for their 60th episode.
I also had the chance to respond to a few questions, which you can check after the break.

Episode 60 (!), and still going strong thanks to your support. For this episode we present Opuswerk(@opuswerk) from Geneva, Switzerland. Opuswerk has previously released on labels like Knotweed, Steadfast and more, but soon we will be able to pick up releases done by him and François X in the record stores as mentioned in the Q&A

1) Hello Hendrik, please tell us a secret about your music that we didn’t know? (gear, sounds, inspiration or something like that)
I love the Elektron machines they’re all over my music. It takes time to get to know them and to like them, but in the end, a true love and hate relationship builds with those. 
Already got the Machine Drum and the Analog Four, and I can’t get to get my hands on an Analog Rytm. Also, I was told some time ago to focus on recording takes rather than programming tracks I believe this was the best tip any-one ever gave me, maybe that one of the secret of my music?
2) How would you describe the sound of opuswerk?
Hypnotic machine funk.
3) What’s coming up? Releases? Parties? What are you looking forward to?
I have an EP coming up in January on Krill Music, with an amazing remix by 19.454.18.5.25.5.18, who’s one of my hero’s and happen to share the same lakeside as me. I’m very excited to see this EP coming out, as some all the tracks mean a lot to me and are the result of refraining to release music, until I thought it was adding a little to the whole current techno discourse.
Next to this, we also recently released an EP as Hiss:1292 (which is a project we have with François X of the Dement3d and Concrete fame) called Veves EP on Dement3d. We’re planning to make a live project of it, and hopefully that will see the light of the dance floors next year.
No big gigs planned at the moment, but I’m very much working on getting some more, so tell your local club manager! I don’t have a booker, so it is easy to book me ;)
4) How is the scene over there?
The scene here is small but somehow vivid. We are however stuck with relatively “big” clubs, which makes it hard to book the less known, but big artists here. It’s really cool, but it leaves a gap in the deeper underground, which used to be very vibrant here. So as a way to propose an alternative to this we’ve started a monthly serie of nights / sunday afternoons called Station pour le lendemain. It takes place in one of the very last alternative places left. It fits about 55 persons, and we kicked the eerie with the great Artefakt from Field records. The whole thing has to be kept low-key, which provides for a different setting and crowd. The main inspiration behind it is Hamburg’s Golden Puddel.
5) Whats your favorite dish before a night of techno?
I’m a sucker for a nice piece of meat, from carré d’agneau to a tartare au couteau, accompanied some nice wine.

Half Dutch, Half Egyptian, and based in Geneva, Hendrik van Boetzelaer has established himself as a key player of the Swiss scene. He is known for his passion for warm and forward thinking music for the body regardless of the genre. Following years of activism as Opuswerk, his first work under his real name, the “Mémoire Du Présent EP”, on François X’s Dement3dXXX, reveals an artist’s coming of age in continuity of his past work.
Trained as an architect, and passionate by the concept of “the club”, he thrives for what triggers raw emotions. Maturing from years of self-education, spawned with dub and drum and bass sound systems, he plays and makes music that is both adventurous and inventive with a defined futuristic aesthetic and firmly grounded in the experience of one’s body on the dancefloor. It’s as if he found his sound as much as it found him, delving inspirations from the wide spectrum of what dance music has to offer: House, Techno, EBM, Electro, IDM, Balearics, old and new.
His approach to producing, both visceral and highly technical have gotten him to team with artists like François X for the HISS:1292 project or Ripperton for the Aelectricitae Live project. As Hendrik van Boetzelear his work has reached a new plateau of explorations where he channels his many cultural origins into freeform experimentations. As a testimony to his never ending hunger for knowledge, and representative of his research process, his previous work using the Opuswerk pseudonym, came out on labels such as Bleed Music, Semantica, ARTS or Dement3d. As Hendrik van Boetzelaer, he has shed his skin and dropped the moniker.
His style is always forward thinking and finds adventurous ways of transporting the dancers beyond the boundaries of the club all the while challenging them. His musical consistency, brings him to play, in the best clubs and festivals from Concrete to Tresor or Mute, CTM Festival and Montreux Jazz or Paleo.
