Yikii’s Crimson Poem 深紅之詩 exists at the foggy threshold where dreams become nightmares. The Changchun-based Chinese producer has released over 20 albums and mini-albums in her relatively short career, but none of them resonate with the same trembling intensity as this latest LP. “It’s the closest to the colour and atmosphere of the new world I imagined, compared to the previous albums,” says Yikii about the relative completeness of what could be described as her first proper full-length. It takes its cue from a particular interest in linear time, where Yikii asks, "if we can meet with the wonders of this world, will there be a new beginning in the next, or will it all fall apart?"

Crimson Poem 深紅之詩 consistently plays with this tension. There’s the rising dread of a hollow hand drum and other traditional instruments knocking up against each other, before they swell into waves of rising choral patches and layered, off-tune chanting on “Five Layers Of Crimson Snow 五重絳雪”. Then there’s the lonely piano and flute that weaves through its own resonance before exploding into noise and dissonance on “Phantasmagoria! 千燈幻景”. These, along with the drunken waltz to close “Liminal Space 虛與實”, echo the eerie fade of a psychological horror.

Inspired by ambient, gabber and post-club; contemporary composition, avant-pop and nursery rhymes, Crimson Poem 深紅之詩 is Yikii’s most complete manifestation of her ongoing creative focus on “sadness and despair in hazy beauty". It’s the surreal sound of a kind of trance-like, in-between state, a hypnagogia that’s not to be confused with the washy psychedelia of ‘hypnagogic pop’. The music here is instead detailed and intentional, with a dark-light chiaroscuro created by the shadows of a haunted gothic. “They are always one step ahead of others in digging deeper into the spiritual realm,” Yikii explains, citing dark fantasy games like Fatal Frame, Fran Bow, and Little Misfortune as aesthetic inspirations. 

Initially intended to be an album of mainly microtonal music and special tunings, Crimson Poem 深紅之詩 has become more of an exercise in world-building rather than straight up music making. There’s an anxious beauty here, where destructive noise meets delicate atmospheres that build and bloom. “I want to create my own world through music and drawings, which exists in a separate time and space, and if I leave, you can still feel my existence through them. From there you can experience a whole world that is alive.”

The forbidden fruit, the sister sun. A language of lust ripening as the sun stretches past its zenith. Inherently feminine in nature, the tomato is associated with Venus, Aphrodite and Hera. Like the great yew, the sentinel of immortality and death, the tomato is dichotomous. A foil to the largely toxic Nightshade family it belongs to, the tomato transmutes the toxic into the edible with its fruit. Originally thought to be poisonous, and even hallucinogenic, tomatoes were long considered a corrupting influence in Europe. A drop of sun under the shade of night, tomatoes can be used in place of other apples, earthapples and nightshades in witchcraft to ward off evil and malice. 

Latin: Solanum lycopersicum is a combination of both Greek and Latin, roughly meaning Persian sun wolf, or wolf peach. The wolf etymology comes from the fact that many members of the nightshade family are poisonous and “persic.” or peaches, were thought to originate from Persia at the time. 

Properties: Pinnate, hairy leaves with 5-9 leaflets; flowers with five petals. Fruits ranging from green, to orange, to yellow, to red, to purple. All parts of the plant, other than the fruit, are mildly toxic, but the leaves can be used in perfumery. Originally cultivated and treasured by the Aztecs and Incas, where other nightshades, like potatoes, were a critical staple in the diet. Tomatoes contain all four major carotenoids, bringing lycopene into focus in particular, which has the highest antioxidant activity of all. 

Companions: Many of tomato’s culinary companions are its spiritual allies as well. Basil will help repel harmful flies and worms. Asparagus will help clear the soil of root-knot nematodes attracted to tomatoes, and tomatoes repel asparagus beetles with a chemical called solanine. Nasturtiums are a self-sacrificing companion which keep black flies and aphids busy, so its companions can thrive. Mints, alliums and amaranth will also help with natural pest control. There’s a great deal of harmonic interference between brassicas and tomatoes, so they will stunt each other’s growth. Sympathetic to the rosehip, another red earth stone, tomatoes can protect roses from black spot disease.

Boardroom sound theme animates the hallways, kick-starting the processes of complex problem solving and multilayered global communication. The hyper-operation continues in the power-dancing zone, a standard procedure of declutterification of the corpo-mind with energetic-pop emotional engineering. The drones power up, and you’re off to the city. Swarming through the neon-lit tubes particles enter their mindful practice cubicles to generate some peace and quiet. Meanwhile, the gravity-elevator takes the authorised ISKRA DELTA care-squad to the top of the 112 floor highrise, a sanctuary for state-of-the-art technological artefacts that keep the brisk tempo of life going. In the simulation the sun rises again and nebula is refracted in the surface of the bio-digital city.
