'Isoscele'

'Isoscele' is the new EP from KhalilH2OP, their first release following the acclaimed album 'The Water We Drink'. An entirely collaborative work, the four tracks place others in the foreground, whether they be friends or family nearby, or international accomplices that come in and out of orbit from afar.

The trio at the heart of KhalilH2OP remains; Minais B, Yen Towers & vocalist NikkiH2OP on this occasion active in the production work and handing the microphone to others. The opening track, Ferrari, is one of the group's first, and it takes the differing perceptions of death and grieving in Scandinavia and Mexico as its theme. The lyrics were written and recorded with Mexican vocalist Ana Lopez in Copenhagen, and tells the story of how Lopez's uncle was sent to heaven with flowers and music, not into the ground in silence, ruminating on how the cosmic inflects one's perceptions and choices. Shatter and Jericho are a pair of collaborations with Copenhagen artists Panxing and Sa Rah, respectively. Jericho marks the latter artist's debut, and is a bewildering ride through glacial synths and cascading artefacts of percussion, with clutches of voice hovering in between each and every dimension. The EP's final track—and namesake—brings Danish-Italian composer and vocalist Francesca Burattelli, as well as Danish-Russian flautist Andreas B. Trap-Jensen, into the fold. Burattelli's lyrics, sung in Italian, are paired with a warm and dancing woodwind recital that together manage a kind of cyber-pagan shoegaze.

‘The Universe Is Inside My Body’ is a very playful work, dense with ideas that balance traditional harmonic composition with algorithmic or generative processes. Shmu (aka Austin based artist Samuel Chown) states his goal as trying to make organic feeling music that is influenced and contains non-organic sounds and methods. The result is not overly-heavy, instead adopting a light touch with brisk musical movements and many wild harmonic choices that don’t settle into total consonance or dissonance. It feels like an artist excited to be trying new things; Sam says it’s his first album without his usual drum and vocal instrumentation, and a chance to experiment in a more digital workspace. 

You could also describes these new pieces visually as explorations or deconstructions of imagined environments, so as you listen think of water & amusement parks, fast pace cityscapes, and abstract video game-inspired landscapes, like 3D and 2D scrolls through candy castles, hedge fields, ice structures, laser zones, etc.

"Angels in the Sand is the second album from Berlin-based artist ava*. Told through swaths of ambience that reference ava*’s own childhood spent on the shoreline, Angels in the Sand poses the ocean as something metaphysical and elemental, the solid ground of the shore rooted in reality while the waves and endless abyss beneath them represent memories and the allure of nostalgia.

Floating in the depths of memories provides a sense of weightlessness, their currents blanketing and comforting but also overpowering and suffocating. Memories are all we have to cling onto, but they can’t be changed. The longer you spend underwater, the more you uncover, and the more it closes in on you. The ocean’s tides are cyclical, but unpredictable: you know you’ll return to its undulating patterns, but it’s unclear who you’ll be when you emerge. Its a sacrifice to go in, but you innocently fall into a belief that heremust lay the answer.

Angels in the Sand is a project about loss. It’s about spending too much time underwater, too much time in reflection, too much time in your childhood, where benign symbols like the beach or the gardenia tree planted outside of your bedroom window become tainted by trauma, their glow of purity tarnished as the picture becomes clearer and clearer. It’s teary eyes in the water, where childlike melodies still play on repeat, the echoes of your voice as a little girl barely audible through the crash of the water.

Angels in the sand is a deeply personal record written, recorded, and mixed by ava* during intense periods of self-isolation, with little to no influence or reference, the writing process itself a silent, lived-in wave of reflection."
