Ellie Stokes is a truly exciting Bristol-based selector, rapidly ascending from the underground with a DJ style that adds colour, variation and flavour to the retro house cuisine.

Here she comes forward with a head-spinning mix of grooves and moods, a wave of warm air peppered with sand, debris and spray. A texturally complex journey through sound.

In parts, this is a true spin of classic house.. But in more ways it's a shot through the kaleidoscope; slap bass, organic vocals, live drums, liquid analogue synths. Proper quality vibes from West Coast UK!

"The  mix  was  recorded  at  the  end  of  the  summer  and  captures  the  early  evening  summer  headyness.  It's  compiled  from  tunes  I  was  listening  to  and  playing  out  at  the  time,  from  deep  and  chilled  to  more  dance  floor  vibes. In this edition of our MIXEDBY series, we were fortunate enough to procure a selection from esteemed producer Jimmy Rouge! The name, which is synonymous with his label Orange Tree Edits, has been responsible for some of the most memorable house-edits of music from around the world - crossing the borders of countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Mr. Rouge is a little bit of a man of mystery. He's not known for doing interviews. We believe the last one he participated in was in 2017. However, Jimmy was able to put together a brief summary of his mix below where he walks us through his current situation and inspiration behind his curation. Enjoy!

"I made this mix while in lockdown in Amsterdam and County Clare in Ireland. I initially started it just as a de-stressing exercise. I was listening to a lot of Japanese new age/ambient and had also made some ambient versions of some Irish songs. One, in particular, is a spacey version of a recording of Martin Hayes playing a reel on the fiddle called ‘Ger The Rigger’. It’s from an album called ‘Live in Seattle’. I’ve added some spoken word and a recording from an Irish radio station. There’s a soundtrack record in there and even a heavily pitched down version of a song by Anúna." - Jimmy Rouge

Having recently celebrated their 2nd birthday earlier this year and just before COVID came along and shut everything down, Nite School are a night very much with a similar open minded music policy to our own and our mutual loves for all things Norwegian crossed in January as we welcomed Lindstrom the week after they offered Skatebard his Manchester debut.

This is a brilliant from the guys and showcases their variety in styles.

Arp Frique is back, delivering four dance floor ready cuts in his signature style. 'Minina Bem Li' is loosely based on Arp Frique’s Cape Verdean connection through Rotterdam and Americo Brito, echoing the spacey 70s sounds of some of his favorite music, this time also with a big role on vocals for Mariseya aka Marissa Nyamekye. Expect dancefloor favorites with a thriving zouk flow and arpeggiated synths.

Tyler, originally from the US, lives in The Hague and has been DJing for almost 6 years now. He fell in love with electronic music while living in Amsterdam. 
Tyler’s taste varies quite radically between all styles of music. Unexpected diversity in the sound is what transformed his idea of what a DJ can do, and how important creating an atmosphere can be. He’s very attracted to catchy melodies; whether they lie in a huge, spacey, synthed-out dance track, Italo with some overdriven toms, a dark disco basement jam with chopped vocals, or an obscure 80s bop that’s been reworked with some higher energy. Tyler thinks it’s an attempt to recreate that rush he felt as a teenager playing electric guitar, blowing out my amp while playing pop-punk sing-alongs in his bedroom after school. 

As of now Graafmachine is not part of a music collective yet and is still searching for his place in the scene on the southwest coast of The Netherlands. We’re digging his sound and are thrilled to have him play a mix for us. Especially, right now in these far from normal times it’s important to connect and listen to each other, hear what’s in our hearts and souls.

“For this, I just let it flow, danced around, and had a fun time imagining some fist pumps and smiles. When I listen to a set, or I’m at a party, I’m just waiting for that one track I’ve never heard before to come in and blow my mind. If I can recreate that feeling for someone else, then I consider whatever I’m doing a success :)”
