Orangutango - Live on Radio Gibraltar

A Bit About Us...
Orangutango are a Gibraltarian rock band formed in Gibraltar in 2010 after a culmination of many jam sessions together live at the Tunnel, a local pub, in Gibraltar on Sunday nights. Orangutango’s musical style has always primed itself by executing a healthy and consistent mix of original songs and covers of various classic and modern rock songs, including anything from Hendrix and The Eagles to Nirvana and Muse. The band has more recently ventured into song writing which has spawned the urge to release a four song EP this coming September which has been recorded this summer. The original songs of the band have been primarily influenced by Andrew Orfila’s spontaneous song-writing as well as the inter-locked relationship between the rhythmic section of the band consisting of Philip Vasquez’s tight drumming and Anand Aidasani’s high-end bass playing. One of the band’s most notable fortes can be witnessed in Mark Alexander’s lead guitar playing which undoubtedly showcases the best of Gibraltar’s young guitar playing talent and general musical talent with his backing vocals.
The band consists of founding members Mark Alexander (Lead Guitar & vocals), Andrew Orfila (Vocals and rhythm guitar) and Philip Vasquez (Percussion). The most recent addition to the band following the departure of Chris Gaduzo has been the bassist Anand Aidasani who had previously performed with the Hamburger Thieves as well as with Philip Vasquez on a number of occasions. The band first performed with their newest addition in one of their many acoustic sets at O’Reilly’s earlier on this summer. With most of the band’s members studying in the UK, Orangutango have seen prime time gigs since their formation in 2010 during the summer, Christmas and Easter periods. This summer the band have already played a host of gigs at various locations including Lord Nelson’s, O’Reilly’s, Rock on the Rock and reached the apex of Gibraltar’s musical precipice by coming third at this year’s Gibraltar Battle of the Bands.
The band’s EP titled ‘Last Orders’ gives emphasis to the band’s many long nights playing in local pubs and bars and having to stay until the last orders of the night were given at the bar. The 3 song EP could be said to give a good reflection of the Band’s raw live-presence ability as two of the tracks featured were first-take recordings without a click timer. The band have always intended the EP to sound natural and raw, the way the band is live – full of ‘in-the-moment’ emotion with no song sounding exactly the same, if anything the EP could be said to not do the band justice following their best performance yet at this year’s Battle of the Bands. The quartet host some of Gibraltar’s best collection of young live session musicians as the band often hosts 3 hour gigs which are often filled with on-the-spot originals and teasing fillers which keel the bands originality and direction.
