Welcome to a new kind of radio. This show goes out to the lovers of the tropical, warm, analog sounds of the revolutionary, independence-era Africa. Focusing on the 60’s-70’s big band orchestra Bambara and Mande music, each episode of MALI GOLD takes you on a trip through previously uncharted musical territory.

And, it’s more.  Much of the music here touches upon deep cultural and historical landmarks within Mande society. We also strive to bring you useful information about the cultural context of the music so that you actually learn while you listen. Ultimately, we aim to foster a deeper appreciation of the oldstyle aesthetic approach that characterized the golden age of music.

Mali Gold 1 - The Bamana Sound

M'Baoudi is an old jeli (griot) song, used exclusively for those warriors who have demonstrated the upmost bravery on the battle field.

Oakland, CA-based ensemble Orchestra Gold offers a kaleidoscope of sound deeply rooted in the Malian tradition while introducing a genre-bending nod to the future through their rare and artful fusion of African Psychedelic Rock. This original sound with a retro feel results from a decade-long collaboration between Mariam Diakite of Mali and Erich Huffaker of Oakland, CA. The music of Orchestra Gold represents this powerful intersection, transcending borders and boundaries to be a force of healing within the community.
