Barbie, you're Beautiful is a piece written in the style of Plunderphonics that contemplates ‘Barbie and her effect on Body Image, Self-Confidence and Stereotypes’ covering beauty and marriage, weight and body image, clothes and consumerism and lastly being like Barbie.

It is surprising how many subliminal messages are sent through the lyrics in the seemingly innocent songs, telling girls to marry, be thin, and wear/ own lots of clothes. 

The recordings used are vintage Barbie adverts from the late 1950's and early 1960's.

A Violin monody depicting a mischievous Sprite that comes out at night.

Night Sprite

Mazarine is a short electronic dance piece involving manipulations of recordings of a 6-string Balalaika.

The inspiration came from Goodwin Sands (East Kent), where beneath the waves lie an underwater graveyard of thousands of ships that have sunk, with and without their sailors over the centuries. The imagery of an underwater city, shifting timber in the seabed echoing the bellows of the the crew at sea all those years ago.

Sortilège ('a foretelling by divination') is loosely inpired by the witches imprisoned in The Cage, St Osyth in Essex. The piece itself follows the path of divination from the first ambiguous glimmers to a full blown prophecy.

This recording is a 2 minute extract taken from the live concert recording performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and conducted by B. Tommy Anderson. The piece was selected as part of their Composition: Wales 2019 Scheme, in which 8 Welsh-based composers gain the opportunity to have their piece work-shopped an performed!
