Their production fuses ambient, downtempo and IDM with blissful chords and deep rhythmic drums that will transport you away. This is clearly reflected in the mix that they have provided here.

Exit Planet Earth 033 - Ralph Lawson

For Jesse Somfay music has always been about communicating and sharing immense feelings which he finds impossible to convey in any other way. His Borealis alias was born as a twinned satellite to his work under his birth name. Much like conjoined twins, the two share the same heart and breathe with the same lungs, and even though they speak of similar things, they do it from two different vantage points. According to Jesse, it is better for something to be felt in whole than to be defined and reflected upon in approximation, and this album - his sixth to date and second under the Borealis handle - is a truly wholesome, boundless, gorgeous emotional experience on both the end of its creator and its listener. 

Glittervoice is Somfay's most energetically intense work to date. It is both euphoric and dysphoric and the music itself cannot be pigeonholed into any particular genre - hints of techno, oldschool trance or rave complement each other just to ultimately get lost in an artfully crafted trademark sound. It’s easy to allow this multifaceted, hyperlayered, continuously shapeshifting aural multiverse to deprive you of any form of reason, activate all senses and carry you where no music has before, regardless of where you listen to it. Glittervoice’s 16 tracks encompass everything from visceral warehouse techno to stylish ambient compositions via rapid hypnotic drum loops and trance synths of cosmic proportions, all filtered through his unique etherial aesthetic. 

Having something equally introspective and weighty yet exceptionally club-friendly is a rare feat that could soundtrack any modern techno mecca - be it a big dark room or an open air festival. 
The emergence of Borealis meant an unexpected turn for Somfay, but at the end of the day, much like its worthy genre-defying predecessor, Glittervoice is yet another album not of this reality - a sonic guide to entering “the flow”.

This month, we welcome our dear friend Shimon Danziger to the series, aka Celeryman.

Born and raised in Sydney, Shimon cut his teeth on the city’s club and warehouse scene. As 1/3 of the Innerspace collective, he ran a series of techno parties, hosting the likes of Peter Van Hoesen, DJ Nobu, Haruka and Wata Igarashi.

Having regularly attended and been influenced by outdoor festivals such as The Labyrinth, he moved to Japan during the pandemic and now lives with his wife in the countryside of the Oita prefecture. He has become an active member of the burgeoning Oita music scene, centred around a very special club, Azul, where this mix was recorded.

“This mix is a meditation on my recent musical journey. The move to Japan, coupled with the pandemic, has given me a stronger connection with nature and accelerated a shift in my listening habits away from the dance floor. I threw in a bunch of old favourites, some new finds, tracks from friends and quite a few Japanese artists who I have become familiar with since moving here. The scene here is unique, in that the deeper you look, there’s always more to find. And it makes me happy to be surrounded by people who take music so seriously.”

good grief, we’ve missed you but god it’s good to be back and with an  exceptional 120 minute (and 5 second) offering full of warmth.

It's our privilege to introduce a true blessing, master of the sonic waves and king of our hearts - Ben Chiu. Benny has his fingers in all the best pies (in our humble opinion). One of the founding fathers of the ever bumpin A Love Supreme & 199A, he has been a pillar in Meanjin for many years. Helping mould and nurture the groove-tastic & community-centric scene that his city so beautifully holds. Listen, we love him, what more can we say?  

In this mix, Benny has proven himself to know a thing or two about not only chilling, but also relaxing. This mix is a mosaic of thought-out notes and grooves, layered with an incredible amount of detail. So please, take a few deep breaths before pressing play, allow the smooth jazz and gentle harmonies to lull you into a state of appreciation. Edinburgh based producer, Rai Scott, returns to Ornate Music, previously releasing on the imprint back in 2014. This long overdue followup to her Innershift EP brings ethereal atmospherics and hypnotising percussion. The opener is a dreamy and celestial vibe with gently rolling beats, while Version 2 is more defined by the smeared chords which spiral to the heavens. 'As Honest As She Lived' is another electric lullaby with well-crafted ambient pads and 'Nina' ends with layers of bells, glistening keys and shimmering melody that soothes the soul.
